AVEVA Applies Data-Centric, 3D System in Plant and Ship Designing

AVEVA’s PDMS (Plant Design Management System) is the leading data centric, multi-disciplinary solution for 3D process plant design. The company’s success in being data-centric for over thirty years set the trend.

PDMS is one of the life-cycle engineering solutions that the company offers to the oil and gas sector in the Middle East market. Addressing the demand for this and in an aim to mirror the internationalisation of its customer base, AVEVA has opened a new regional headquarters in Dubai . The new office provides sales and technical support for its established offices in UAE and Saudi Arabia ; and for its regional clients, which include ADMA-OPCO, Petrofac International Limited, Technip, Sazeh and J. Ray McDermott.

Louay Dahmash, Regional Director, Middle East , AVEVA commented: “The opening of the new headquarters in the region demonstrates our sustained growth and continuing success in this market. The Middle East is a rapidly developing market and through our new business operations in Dubai , we will be in a stronger position to support our broad client base. The region has the largest capital investment on market growth.”

Formerly known as Cadcentre, AVEVA provides totally integrated solutions for all aspects of the development and life cycle of process and power projects, which are divided into three phases – Front End Engineering Design (FEED), Engineer, Procure, Construct (EPC) and operations.

VANTAGE Plant Design (VPD), one of the suites in the family Vantage offers a non-area based design system for every discipline. Using its own database it removes the need for third party software to support it and it is therefore a complete design solution

VPD, with PDMS as its core, is the most widely used and effective 3D design and visualization software available. This system is a totally integrated environment with a single physical model that fully manages graphics and data automatically. It is the original and still unequalled ‘graphics from data’ technology. It enables design or maintenance teams to work within their areas of responsibility, safe in the knowledge that data integrity and consistencies are maintained at all times. The result is a time and cost-effective delivery of a clash-free design with automated deliverables for the project.

A time and cost effective design is not sufficient; a fast, accessible and repeatable process is also essential when producing deliverable drawings for engineering projects. This is because most engineering contractors are required to supply project deliverables in a format and style defined by their clients.

The company’s answer to it is its Final Designer, made possible with its alliance with Autodesk, the world's leading design software and digital content company . It enables post-production editing of PDMS deliverables in AutoCAD, but also synchronises final drawings with any subsequent changes in the model on demand. Drawings that are automatically produced in PDMS can now be created, annotated, modified and refined, from within the AutoCAD environment. Subsequent design changes to the PDMS model will be reflected in previously formatted AutoCAD drawings.

As specialized as it is, PDMS remains open through its interfaces and is highly customisable to the client’s requirement with the GUI being developed with its PML (Programmable Macro Language).

“Migration from one system to another is not a problem because we have the tools right now to translate a model from a different system to PDMS” added Dahmash.

With regard to shipbuilding, the company has acquired Tribon solutions, the leading supplier of IT solutions for shipbuilding and marine industry. The acquisition provides AVEVA strength in the marine design sector specifically that of hulls and other floating structures.

Not surprisingly therefore, Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the world’s biggest shipbuilder acquired more than 1,000 licenses of the company’s marine products . HHI will initially use Tribon M3 and PDMS and take up the new VANTAGE Marine products as and when they are released.
