Maritime Industrial Services expands Sharjah yard
Posted: 08 January 2004
Maritime Industrial Services Co. Ltd. Inc.(MIS) announces the completion
of the civil works of their major expansion project for the MIS
Sharjah Fabrication Yard which has been handed over in December,
2003.
The civil works allowed MIS to reclaim additional land and construction
of a sheet pile jetty. The project has added approximately 75,000
M2 to MIS’ Sharjah Fabrication Yard.
Also the new sheet pile jetty installed will have a water depth
of –8.0 M at low tide and approximately 400 M length.
MIS will be able to berth 6 drilling rigs concurrently for repairs
at the new facility, or to take on an FPSO conversion project. MIS
has cooperated with the Sharjah Port Authority and has negotiated
a long term lease agreement for the facilities. The engineer and
project manager for the project is Halcrow International Partnership
and the construction contractor is NSCC.
Following the civil works expansion, MIS is also planning to invest
heavily over the next two to three years for expanding the Sharjah
Fabrication Yard infrastructure which will double its current fabrication
capacity.
This infrastructure will include such items as two loadout and
fabrication areas for topsides modules up to 10,000 tons and offshore
platforms up to 100 M water depth, new fabrication buildings and
fabrication areas for piping, tubular manufacture, pile fabrication,
fabrication of stainless steel and exotic metals and other general
logistics and office infrastructure.
Jerry Smith, President & CEO of MIS gave the following statements.
“It is the aim of the owners of MIS to establish it as the
number one medium sized fabrication company in the Gulf Area. With
the development of the Sharjah Fabrication Yard as an integrated
rig repair, process and marine fabrication facility, MIS can offer
a competitive advantage to its clients who operate from two or three
separate yards in the UAE. In addition, this yard facility will
support the expansion of MIS’ fabrication and service yards
in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and its fabrication and construction
projects performed throughout the Middle East.
The first major project for the newly expanded yard has already
been booked. MIS has contracted with National Drilling Company (NDC)
for the complete refurbishment and upgrading of its Al-Ittihad Rig
which will arrive at the new facility in February of this year.
This project is especially suited to the new fabrication facility
as it requires major fabrication of a new cantilever and several
hull additions which can be fabricated in the large yard space adjacent
to the rig as well as a new quarters building and the other refurbishment
works to be carried out on the rig. As this is MIS’ first
project in the new yard and NDC is a very important client, MIS
is keen to make this project a success.
The Middle East fabrication market is expanding and MIS needs to
be in the forefront of this activity. With placement in the Middle
East of FPSO fabrication and installation projects, the huge requirements
of post-war Iraq construction and the normal Gulf market fabrication
and construction, the outlook for the fabrication business is bright.
MIS has doubled its turnover between 2000 and 2002 and maintained
its Sharjah Yard at full capacity for fabrication in 2003.
The MIS goal is to build and expand to meet the requirements and
challenges of the coming market in the UAE and Middle East. MIS
expect a great future”.
