Posted: 24 January 2004

HE Sultan Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman, Dubai Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation and Metito CEO Mutaz Ghandour conduct official ground breaking ceremony

Construction work has started at Techno Park, Dubai, on the Dhs 50 million global headquarters for Metito, a world leader in water, wastewater and desalination treatment projects and technology.

The start of construction was marked by an official ground breaking ceremony undertaken at Techno Park by H.E. Sultan Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman, Dubai Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation and Metito Chief Executive Officer Mr. Mutaz Ghandour.

Metito will now consolidate all its global offices, manufacturing and research facilities from the UK, USA and within the UAE, to one site at the new park that is being developed on Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, close to the existing Jebel Ali Free Zone.

The company anticipates moving in to the new headquarters in mid 2005, when the company will occupy an estimated 500,000 square feet giving them adequate room to expand operations in the future. A total of 500 engineers, scientists, technicians and executives will work from the new location.

Metito is the first major international company to start construction work at the Techno Park, Dubai that will focus on research and technological development in the areas of water desalination and environmental resources. The project is being developed under the authority of Dubai Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation.

HE Sultan Bin Sulayem said at the occasion of the groundbreaking: “The Desalination Cluster we are creating at Techno Park will be one of its kind in the world. As a global leader in desalination technology it is very appropriate that Metito will be the first company to commence construction work on their Headquarters. This shows that Dubai could in a short period create a new international hub for developing this kind of technology and specialised science and exporting it to the world.

“This initiative is only the first step and there will be other initiatives to follow that will match what Dubai has already achieved in the economic and industrial sectors. Techno Park has already proved its worth in a short period since the project was announced with the support of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, UAE Minister of Defence and Chairman of the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation.

Metito CEO Mutaz Ghandour said: “We are very proud to be the first major company to establish itself in this pioneering technological environment. From here we will manage our operations all over the world.

“As a company committed to technological excellence and preserving the environment Techno Park is the perfect location for METITO. Over 50 per cent of the world’s desalination projects are in the Gulf region and it estimated that demand for desalted water in the UAE will double by 2010. The Arab World is also forecast to invest over $30 billion dollars in desalination projects by the year 2025.”

Metito also intends to showcase its technological expertise on site by constructing a water treatment and waste water treatment desalination plant that will enable the company to become totally self sufficient in water. The plant will recycle the wastewater and become a showcase of how the company’s leading edge technology operates in practice.

Managing Director Fady Juez adds: “We have been recognised as a leader in our field for many years and creating this demonstration plant will allow other companies and interested parties to see our expertise at first hand. Techno Park, Dubai will give us the opportunity to grow our business and is a perfect location from which to operate our increasing global business.”

Techno Park Chief Executive, Abdullah Al Qurashi, added: “Metito is the ideal kind of world-class company we want to attract to Techno Park. We are especially pleased that a global company created from within the Arab World should be our first major tenant with such leading edge expertise in desalination technology.”

Techno Park, Dubai will cover an area of 33 sq km near the 8th interchange of Sheikh Zayed Road. Desalination, a core skill for Metito, will be a major focus of activity on the Park with demand for desalinated water estimated to double in the UAE alone by 2010.

The Park will initially focus on three major areas creating a Desalination Custer, that will be one of its kind in the world; an Oil & Gas Cluster to support a region with 35 per cent of the world’s total crude oil production and an Environmental Resources and Management Cluster committed to the prevention and reverse of desertification, marine research and conservation and clean and unconventional energy.

Metito will also establish a training centre and host seminars at the Park to help enhance the skills and knowledge of local University students, engineers and technicians working within the water, wastewater and desalination industries.
