SPE announces membership at 2003 year-end reached a total
of 60,559
Membership has been on a steady incline since 2000. SPE now boasts
more than 60,000 members in more than 100 countries, including engineers,
scientists, technicians, managers, operators, educators, students
and other professionals involved in the global upstream oil and
gas industry.
“With Halliburton underwriting annual membership dues for
all student members, we’ve seen that area really grow,”
said Mark Rubin, SPE Executive Director. “This program started
on 1 October 2002, when SPE had 5,000 student members. Now it has
grown to nearly 12,000 students. We now have a more globally expansive
student membership and they are realizing the benefits our society
offers as they enter into and grow their professional careers.”
SPE has 152 sections in 58 countries. 2003 marks the highest number
of members since 1985, which had a total of 56,509 members. During
2003, SPE formed new sections in Northern China and Tomsk, Russia.
At year-end SPE also had established four new student chapters at
Universidad Surcolombiana in Colombia, Universidad Nacional de Piura
in Peru, Tomsk Polytechnic University in Russia, and Enugu State
University of Science and Technology in Nigeria.
“SPE continues to respond to member needs by providing new
and efficient ways to disseminate the latest information on technologies
and developments in the industry,” said Kate Baker, 2004 SPE
President. “We continue to enhance SPE.org. SPE also is reaching
into new regions of the world to build membership. SPE opened a
new office in Dubai in October of 2003 and plans to manage new international
meetings in the Middle East as well.”
SPE (Society of Petroleum Engineers) is a not-for-profit professional
association whose members are engaged in energy resources development
and production. SPE serves 60,000-plus members from more than 100
