Cranfield University joins PIG
Posted: 04 February 2004
Cranfield University in the UK has joined the Pipeline Industries
Guild as an academic affiliate.
Cranfield’s membership is centred on the postgraduate- only
departments, the Welding Engineering Research Centre and the Offshore
Technology Centre.
Cranfield has a long tradition in welding research, particularly
in relation to pipelines.
The University operates a state-of-the-art welding research laboratory
and a hyperbaric welding facility for investigating pipeline repair.
When TransCanada Pipelines installed the world’s first pipeline
using TMCP X100 linepipe in September 2002, the company deployed
methods developed at Cranfield.
Cranfield pioneered tandem arc welding to narrow pipeline welding,
and the Centre at Cranfield has developed the new CAPS equipment
(Cranfield Automated Pipe Welding System) following successful trials.
This is a new high productivity, dual-tandem GMAW system.
Using the hyperbaric facility, the Cranfield team has established
the feasibility of GMAW for deep water repairs, and current research
focuses on evolving techniques to support the development of a repair
system for deep water pipelines.
One of the benefits of Cranfield’s membership of the Guild
is that fellow PIG Members will be entitled to a 10 per cent discount
on modules* when staff register for the part-time modular MSc course
in Offshore and Ocean Technology, including the Pipeline Engineering
specialist option.
In addition to the part-time MSc, PIG member companies can use
individual CPD modules from the Offshore Engineering and Technology
programme for specific training requirements.
Modules include Offshore Pipeline Design and Installation.
