First Automatic Meter Reading Technical Tour USA
Posted: 05 February 2004
The first ever Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) technical tour USA
will take place from the 20-27 March 2004, giving participants the
opportunity to see first-hand some of the largest AMR sites in the
United States. The tour commences in Philadelphia and ends in San
Diego. Utilities, consultants and vendors will demonstrate the fundamentals
of and give in-depth Knowledge and comprehensive information on
AMR projects.
The AMR Technical Training Tour is part of the Metering International
Academy Series providing hands-on training for participants; drawing
upon a wealth of industry experience of utilities, vendors, and
consultants, with proven experience, involved in many aspects of
appraising, attaining and implementing technologies. Industry experience
is illustrated through case studies, specific prior project work
and available literature.
AMR systems are complex as they have to blend with multiple technologies
over several years through changing conditions and therefore need
to be strategically and carefully implemented and must therefore
be widely researched. The organizer’s Managing Director, Mr
Rudi Leitner says: “Utilities must approach AMR choices with
careful preparation that includes an awareness of the many issues
involved over the long term.”
“The United States can certainly be named the pioneers of
AMR. Not only did AMR start in this part of the world, but by 2001,
92.7% of all AMR units installed were in North America. The US is
seen as the world leaders in this technology”, says Leitner.
The utilities participating and showcasing their AMR projects are
PECO, NEVADA POWER, Greater Cincinnati Water Works, PPL Electric
Utilities and San Diego Gas & Electric. On site, the utilities
will also demonstrate the extended services beyond AMR such as customer
billing, appliance monitoring, energy management and home security
monitoring.
The tour will end in San Diego and will join up with delegates
at the 5th annual Metering, Billing and CRM/CIS America 2004 conference
and exhibition where participants will be able to meet and network
with additional industry experts and technology providers.
There are many aspects to consider before introducing an AMR system
– the communication medium, the ability to interact with existing
technologies, scalability, regulatory trends and more. Delegates
at the AMR Technical Tour USA will be able to learn from those who
have gone before, and will gain priceless first-hand knowledge of
the best practices used by US utilities. Attendance is essential
for anyone who has already implemented or is about to introduce
AMR into their utility.
