Process and Pipeline Services introduce mobile flare system

Fully mobile flare system offers environmentally sound
approach to clearing waste gases without releasing harmful hydrocarbons
Process and Pipeline Services (BJ PPS) today announced that its
field-proven variable tip flare system is now trailer-mounted, making
the system fully mobile. The Mobile Flare System, which was introduced
by BJ PPS in 1999 as the “Hi-Lo” variable tip flare
system, is used to achieve a clean, smoke-free burn of harmful waste
gases with minimal impact on the environment. Today, BJ PPS can
provide the self-erected trailer-mounted incinerator for a faster,
more efficient solution to every temporary flaring operation.
The BJ PPS Mobile Flare System is a completely enclosed, fully
insulated system in which electronically controlled combustion occurs.
An integrated control cabin is used to monitor and report flow rate,
pressure, temperature and emission data in real time, ensuring that
combustion will adhere to regional environmental legislation regarding
emission levels. To provide evidence of compliance with these regulations,
all emission data is logged and recorded to preserve a complete
record of the flaring process. The patented Mobile Flare System
is fully automated and incinerates gases to ensure a high burning
temperature of more than 1000ºC. It consistently delivers high
incineration efficiencies of greater than 99%, in conformance with
current European Community directives on emissions.
Rapid Response is Key
The system consists of two primary units:
- the process control cabin and
- the modular variable tip flare stack
“Although arguably mobile when introduced in 1999, its size
and dimensions made transporting the system a logistical challenge,”
said John Adams, general manager of BJ PPS.
“To overcome this, the entire Mobile Flare System is now
easily transported on a single 40-ft. low loading trailer. The primary
benefit of this development is that we can respond faster and deliver
it more rapidly to any site for immediate use, whether it is to
eliminate waste gas during refinery or process shutdowns, degas
tanks or pipelines, or incinerate toxic waste,” he added.
During the past five years, the Flare System has been employed
by BJ PPS throughout Europe on a number of occasions where rapid
response and mobility was required. The addition of a fully mobile
system to the fleet was an obvious and very logical step taken by
BJ PPS to satisfy client needs. The system has been employed to
destroy waste gases during a plant shutdown, and ship tanker storage
tanks, burn waste vapours and flare gases during well testing operations.
“Since BJ PPS launched this technology, we have successfully
incinerated all waste gases within acceptable environmental limits
on behalf of our clients, even where flowrates and gas concentrations
were continually vacillating,” said Adams. “It also
means a great deal to our clients that the structure of the flaring
system shields the flame from the environment, thereby protecting
the surrounding area from light emission, heat radiation and fallout
pollution. In sum, the system has delivered successfully in every
use thus far, creating a “win-win” situation for all
concerned,” he added.
Safety is Paramount
Because safety is paramount to every flaring operation, the BJ Mobile
Flare System incorporates a full complement of safety equipment.
These include oxygen monitors, flame and detonation arrestors, and
fail-safe PLC. Its unique design assures stable, smokeless combustion
and maintains temperature control over a wide range of gas composition
and flowrates. For low-pressure applications - such as tank cleaning,
degassing and landfills – two booster pumps are mounted on
the trailer.
BJ Services Company is a leading provider of pressure pumping and
related oilfield services to the petroleum industry. The company
operates in every major oil and gas producing region.
