Invensys receives third order to upgrade controls at Total offshore production and exploration facilities

Posted: 19 February 2004

Single-source order based on Invensys’ successful track record in upgrading PROVOX control systems with I/A Series systems on two other Total platforms

Invensys has received its third order to replace a control system for Total’s (formerly TotalFinaElf) offshore production and exploration operation. As part of an ongoing modernization program for its offshore production facilities in the North Sea, Total awarded Invensys the contract to install a Foxboro I/A Series control system -- plus the latest Triconex safety systems -- on its L7CC production platform.
This single-source contract was awarded primarily because Invensys’ Netherlands-based project team had previously completed system upgrades on two other Total platforms ahead of schedule using Invensys’ unique “Plug in” system migration approach. This approach utilizes existing field wiring, terminations, and system enclosures to reduce costs and minimize lost production.

“Any disruption in production can have serious consequences for our contractual commitments to our customers. In our first project with Invensys we specified a maximum of ten days down time to make the switchover; they delivered in seven. In the second, we gave them five days; they did it in less than five days. We have been so satisfied with the speed of the migration and the performance of the resulting I/A series control system, that we did not even consider alternatives for the next project,” explained the Total project manager.

Invensys’ first system upgrade for Total was at its K6P location in the North Sea, 80 kilometers from Den Helder. Invensys won that project in a competitive bid to replace the aging Emerson Process Management PROVOX system that was installed when the platform went on line in 1991.

Based on the success of that migration, Total then invited Invensys to bid on a similar system upgrade at the Total F15A location in the North Sea. Invensys once again won the contract and replaced a second PROVOX system with an I/A Series system.

Under this latest contract, performed in conjunction with a complete platform overhaul, Invensys will replace the existing PROVOX control system and other pneumatic instrumentation at the L7CC offshore production facility with a completely new I/A Series control system; replace the existing emergency shutdown system with a Triconex Safety Instrumented System (SIS); and upgrade the existing Triconex fire and gas system with the latest Triconex technology. Planning and preparation are now under way, with the new systems expected to start up in the spring of 2004.

Once again, every effort is being made to minimize production downtime during the installation and commissioning of the new Invensys systems.
