UAE
companies save on energy bills with efficient solutions

Energy Management Services (EMS) introduces Energy Value Engineering
solutions that reduce new development capital expenses and produce
high tech smart properties
Businesses and residential complexes in the UAE can save up to
35 per cent on their total energy bills by implementing energy efficient
solutions that have been developed and refined to suit energy usage
patterns in the local markets. Energy Management Services (EMS),
a leading energy savings company in the Middle East since the mid
’90s, has pioneered innovative customized solutions that can
drastically reduce consumption and costs on energy in commercial
and residential institutions.
“Energy represents the biggest component of operational costs
in most businesses, underlining the need for solutions that reduce
energy consumption and costs. According to recent research findings,
65% of upper management personnel in various companies consider
energy as the least controllable cost. Energy savings can pay for
a substantial part of the annual maintenance cost, resulting in
great savings for public and corporate institutions,” said
Khaled Bushnaq, Managing Director, Energy Management Services.
“EMS has designed solutions that make efficient use of available
energy resources through proven high–technology systems and
sound engineering practices. We have implemented projects that have
delivered savings worth millions of dollars in investment and operational
expenses for our customers including all segments of the industrial
sector, individual corporate institutions such as hotels and shopping
centres, or residential and commercial complexes, irrespective of
whether they are existing premises or new structures. Each solution
is customized, depending on the size, structure and individual needs
of the customer,” Bushnaq added.
EMS was set up in response to a growing demand for efficient energy
management among companies as well as conservation of resources.
The company uses internationally proven smart processes and products
that can optimize energy (electricity, water and gas) consumption
without disturbing the operations of the facility even during installation.
It directly addresses the lighting, power, water and HVAC (heating,
ventilating and air-conditioning) systems in a building, resulting
in proven and demonstrated savings in cost. All the equipment is
kept out of sight and the solutions are designed to be non-obtrusive
and thus do not affect the design or working of the facility.
EMS solutions are used by corporate establishments in several industries
to reduce energy costs and consumption, as well as to fulfil their
responsibility to the environment. The company offers solutions
based on a win-win principle called ‘Performance Contracting’.
Under this scheme, the client is not required to make any initial
investment for adopting the program. EMS conducts and finances the
program and receives payment from the client’s monthly energy
savings. The client’s savings start as soon as the system
is installed, and can range between 12 to 35 percent of total energy
bills. At the end of the payback period, ownership of EMS’
installed equipment is transferred to the client. Clients can also
opt to pay upfront and ask EMS to supply, install, commission and
demonstrate savings for three months.
EMS’ energy saving solutions such as devices for air conditioning
units, heat recovery wheels, automation and efficient lighting systems
are characterised by a remote controlled energy management facility.
From a Central Command Centre (CCC) established at its offices,
EMS can track energy consumption levels of a facility on an hourly,
daily, weekly and monthly basis. Digital metres at the CCC are linked
to client facilities through telephone lines, enabling regular supervision
of systems’ performance. A centralised command centre also
allows EMS to remotely manage system parameters for optimising performance
levels of installed equipment. The regular monitoring of facilities’
internal environment and average energy consumption data further
provides an accurate consumption forecast.
“The uniqueness of our service is that each solution is customized,
taking into account the fact that buildings are designed and operated
differently. Our team of engineers undertakes a thorough audit of
the existing or planned energy systems and makes a recommendation,
tailored to suit the client. For example, a programmable thermostat
can be used in air-conditioning or heating equipment so that temperatures
can be programmed to vary according to the time of day, to respond
to ambient (outside) temperature or according to operational schedules.
Thus, the energy system will operate at highest productivity during
peak working hours, and switch to a lower level automatically when
not needed,” said Bushnaq.
EMS’ impressive list of clients includes JW Marriott Hotel,
Al Bustan Rotana Hotel, Le Meridien Hotel in Abu Dhabi, Lamcy Plaza,
RAK Ceramics and Union Properties Development. The company received
a Special Recognition award of the World Energy congress in the
United States in 1993.
