Posted: 15 March 2004
Oil and gas services company PSL Energy Services Ltd has been honoured
for its excellent health and safety record, and ground-breaking
initiatives.
The Aberdeen-based company won the Health, Safety and Environment
Award, sponsored by BP, in the Scottish Offshore Achievement Awards.
The awards are organised by Scottish Enterprise’s Energy
Team in conjunction with industry sponsors and recognise the outstanding
achievements of companies in the offshore energy sector.
The judges were impressed with a wide range of HSE improvements
and initiatives introduced by the company over the last year and
its 31 month LTA-free record.
The implementation of an Integrated Management System has significantly
streamlined documentation and improved the workforce’s overall
understanding of the system objectives.
Employees working together with the company’s QHSE department
identified opportunities where rationalisation would bring multiple
benefits to personnel, customers and suppliers.
PSL were able to show a strategy of simplifying procedures by introducing
Process Flow Diagrams improved business performance and led to the
widespread understanding and visibility of HSE standards and systems.
The company-wide adoption of the Du Pont STOP safety programme,
allied with regular safety meetings, employee forums, on-site toolbox
talks and an internal safety bulletin system, ensures that all safety
issues are focused, addressed and communicated throughout the company.
PSL’s safety performance has improved year on year over the
past five years, resulting in zero recordings of LTA in the last
31 months.
The judging panel heard PSL conducted regular management reviews,
attended by directors and senior managers, at which trend analysis,
improvement opportunities and specialise training requirements were
agreed and approved.
Managing director Doug Duguid said: “We believe that our
excellent safety performance is related to the introduction of company
work groups that are populated by a cross section of employees.
Getting this individual and team buy-in has created a sense of involvement
and accountability.
“The strong safety culture that is inherent in our employees
has been a major contribution to the year on year performance improvement.
“Our safety statistics/performances give clear evidence of
the commitment to health and safety from our entire work force and
we are delighted this SOOA award recognises our position as an industry
leader in HSE.
“The award is a tribute to our hard working staff who continue
to provide cost effective, innovative solutions for the oil and
gas industries, without comprising our outstanding health and safety
record.”
PSL’s QHSE manager, Bill Nelson, said: “Our staff have
been superb in adapting to and supporting these new procedures and
now actively seek personal objectives that will result in participation
in the internal audit programme.
“They realise the importance of maintaining our reputation
as a company which is seriously committed to health and safety issues
and of the benefits it brings to themselves personally, to our business
performance and to our customers.”
