ENOC launches hi-tech memory chip payment cards

Posted: 16 March 2004

New payment systems raise service benchmark

Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) LLC and its subsidiary Emirates Petroleum Products Company (EPPCO) LLC have launched a range of payment card products featuring state-of-the-art memory chip technology.

The new cards allow basic cardholder details to be stored, providing greater security for cardholders, and enhanced expenditure control for fleet managers.

Hussain Sultan, ENOC’s Group Chief Executive and Board Member, said: “ENOC pioneered card payments at service stations in the UAE, now it is taking the convenience of card payments to the next level.”

The 21st century payment solutions are a result of market analysis and careful monitoring of customer needs.

“The new cards meet customer requirements by providing greater convenience, payment flexibility and swift payment throughout the largest network of service stations in Dubai and the Northern Emirates,” added Sultan.

In another regional industry first, the new payment cards will be accepted in the Sultanate of Oman, following a cross-border deal with the Al Maha service station network. The agreement also guarantees Al Maha ‘Smart Fuel’ cards will be accepted across the extensive ENOC/EPPCO network in the UAE.

The new ENOC/EPPCO Select Plus smart card is an innovative corporate fleet management tool which gives fleet managers complete control over how, where and when money is spent on fuel and other items throughout the ENOC and EPPCO network.

Already the UAE's leading card for fleet management, with more than 80,000 card holders, the Select Plus smart card builds on the success of the existing magnetic-stripe Select card, but is now has added functionality, and a credit or debit facility.

Select Plus Credit is the new generation of fleet fuel management card for the UAE and Oman.

“With this card solution, which is backed by an impressive web-based management system, the expenditure of a large fleet can be simply and effectively controlled,” said Sultan.

“After a suitable credit check, fleet managers can set monthly/weekly or even daily credit limits for card holders. They can define exactly what purchases can be made on the cards and can view regular statements on-line. The web site is the first of its kind in the UAE, and is available for the convenience of all fleet managers.”

Select Plus Credit gives 360 degree accountability for successful fleet management, and is part of ENOC’s continuing mission to be the transport industry’s Energy Partner of Choice.

Select Plus Debit is aimed at small to medium enterprises looking for complete fleet expenditure control. Individual card expenditure limits can be set; and pre-paid consumption can be monitored in monthly or more frequent statements, which can be downloaded on-line.

Customers simply have the amount spent on the card directly debited from a named bank account. Precisely where the card can be used, and on which services, can also be defined.

“The card chip allows for added security, storing card holder information as well as credit and purchase limitations,” explained Sultan. “Expenditure above a certain amount can also be controlled by PIN number if desired by the fleet manager or card holder.”

Both Select smart cards can now be pre-programmed with an individual vehicle registration number and will only accept transactions for that vehicle.

Cash Plus is the latest innovation in pre-paid, re-loadable fuel cards.

New card holders fill out a registration card, which then ensures access to a host of exclusive, targeted promotions and benefits across the group’s 162-strong service station network. The electronic cash can be used to buy fuel, car washes, oil changes and convenience store products.

Cash Plus are initially available and re-loadable with any dirham amount, determined by the customer. Being chip-based, transactions can be better monitored, receipts printed in the card holders’ name and security is increased. Cardholders can opt for PIN control over the card, so if it is lost, no-one else can use it.

ENOC/EPPCO’s existing E-Cash cards will remain in circulation for some time, to allow customers to spend outstanding value loaded on the cards, and to fully realise the benefits of moving to the new chip-based Cash Plus.

To encourage E-Cash card holders to switch, exciting monthly prizes will be offered to those buying and using Cash Plus cards.

E-cash is ENOC and EPPCO’s easy to use, no-frills re-loadable cash card. These magnetic-stripe based cards are aimed at business people visiting Dubai, the Northern Emirates and Oman on short term assignments, tourists with vehicles and other visitors with a desire to take advantage of pre-payment.

Cards are available in AED100, 200 and 500 denominations, and E-cash card holders often enjoy a host of exclusive benefits and promotions throughout the ENOC network.

All the cards can be used at all EPPCO and ENOC stations in the UAE to fill up with fuel, car washes, oil changes, or for convenience store shopping.

Application for all cards is straight forward, and for the Select Plus Credit and Debit cards, subject to certain conditions.

“Smart cards allow fleet managers and ENOC to better analyse buying patterns,” explained Sultan. “ENOC will then be better able to target specific promotions towards relevant customers. Through this smart technology we can now collate data, analyse trends and develop even closer relationships with our ever-expanding and valued customer base.”
