Pipeline
integrity issues to be discussed at global forum
Posted: 18 March 2004
Pipeline engineers from Asia, UK and Australia are scheduled to
meet in Kuala Lumpur, 26-27 May to discuss key strategies to maximise
the profitability and productivity of their pipeline assets.
Despite having an extensive pipeline network that extends from
Senipah to Bontang, Popi Nafis from VICO Indonesia will reveal how,
in only 5 years, the Production Coordination and Transmission Department
managed to successfully integrate routine maintenance into an overall
integrity management program at the Oil & Gas IQ forum.
This international forum on Pipeline Integrity Management for Oil
& Gas will feature speakers from major operators including Total
E&P UK and Brunei Shell, long recognized for their pioneering
Pipeline Integrity Management System [PIMS].
Like reservoir management practices, pipeline management requires
a delicate balance of many factors, including technical and managerial
skills, financial resources, and environmental compliance.
As pipeline infrastructures age and pipes are being laid in ever
deeper and more difficult environments, operators need to implement
inspection and maintenance programs in order to effectively assess
and control the condition of their pipelines and extend their life
cycle.
Opening the 2-day conference with insights on managing pipeline
infrastructure and achieving operational integrity is NACE, East
Asia - Regional Director, Bob Phang.
In addition, Malaysia’s state owned oil company Petronas
Carigali will detail how they developed and implemented in their
3 main operating regions of Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia,
their proprietary Carigali Pipeline Integrity Management System
(CPIMS).
Other critical pipeline integrity issues to be thrashed out will
include avoiding, detecting, and assessing the severity of mechanical
damage to pipelines; conducting risk-based inspections and non-intrusive
monitoring techniques; and selecting the right ILI tools.
