Tubular Services promotes Gary Young
Posted: 19 March 2004
BJ Services Company today announced that Gary Young has been promoted
to area operations manager - Latin America for BJ Tubular Services.
Young is responsible for overseeing all BJ Tubular Services activities
in the region, including financial, operational, quality assessment
matters, and managing the division’s bases in Trinidad, and
in Macae and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
With more than 13 years of international experience in the oil
industry, Young brings a comprehensive knowledge of casing and running
services. Prior to his promotion to area operations manager –
Latin America, he served for two years as country operations manager
- Brazil at the division’s regional base in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil.
Of particular note is his ongoing management of several of the
division’s contracts in Brazil and Trinidad. BJ Tubular Services’
contract with Schlumberger Servicos de Petroleo Ltda supplies a
range of chrome tubular and screen liner well services offshore
Brazil on behalf of Petrobras. The contract calls for the running
of all completions and sand screens on 20 wells on Petrobras’
Albacore Leste Field development. Previously, he managed Shell/Enterprise
Oil casing and tubing running services for all 15 wells on their
Bijupirá & Salema development in the Campos Basin offshore
Brazil. Recently, Petrobras awarded a casing running services contract
to BJ Tubular Services that required casing in sizes ranging from
36" to 7-5/8". To meet Petrobras's requirements for new
well designs, BJ Tubular Services brought in special equipment to
Brazil, such as 36" and 30" SurGrip belt tongs and 16",
13-5/8" and 11-3/4" running equipment.
In addition, Young played a key role in the management of the division’s
contract with British Gas Trinidad and Tobago Limited to provide
a range of well services offshore Trinidad. The contract, which
was completed in September 2003, required BJ to supply casing and
tubing running services, and hydraulic hammer conductor driving
services for all wells on the new British Gas NCMA development,
which is located approximately 25 miles off the North coast of Trinidad.
BJ Tubular Services also provides onshore bucking services in Brazil
and Trinidad utilising the Series 2000 Chromemaster unit to make
up chrome completion components for Petrobras, Schlumberger, Baker,
BP Trinidad and BHP. In addition, BJ Tubular Services provides SpeedTop
pipe transportation frames, as well as SpeedTally to generate laser
measurements and tallying of tubulars, and SpeedCal, an electronic
internal caliper, to accurately measure the internal diameter of
casing joints.
Young launched his career in the oil industry in 1990 when he joined
BJ Tubular Services as an electronic technician in Aberdeen, and
was promoted to torque turn supervisor in 1993. In 1996 he became
operations supervisor responsible for managing BJ Tubular Services’
operations in the UKCS, before being appointed technical sales representative
one year later. Then, as the division’s activities expanded
into West Africa, Young was promoted to operations supervisor for
Equatorial Guinea in 2000 where he worked for two years.
Originally from Aberdeen, Scotland, Young is based at the division’s
region headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He reports to Neil
Gordon, general manager of BJ Tubular Services, who is based at
the division’s international headquarters in Aberdeen.
BJ Tubular Services specialises in personnel and equipment for
running casing and tubing, particularly premium connections, high
chrome content tubulars, dual, triple and sub-sea completions, as
well as hammer conductor-driving services. The division is known
throughout the world for its innovative technology. With its headquarters
in Aberdeen, Scotland, BJ Tubular Services operates bases in the
United States, South America, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Europe
and Africa where it holds significant contracts with major operators,
alliance partners and drilling contractors.
