Borouge
reinforces position as polymer industry leader
Posted: 29 March 2004
Borouge reinforced its position as the preferred supplier of polyolefins
when it participated in Dubai Plast Pro 2004.
Dubai Plast Pro 2004 brings together polymer industry experts from
all around the world.
Speaking at the opening of the conference, Hubert Puchner, Chief
Executive for Borouge Pte Ltd said "In recent years there has
been a tremendous growth in demand for polyolefins as consumers
begin to recognize the benefits of polyethylene pipes when compared
with non polymeric solutions. The challenge we face as an industry
is to ensure that we can meet this demand and provide the technical
support for developing markets particularly in Asia."
Further industry insights were also provided by Didier Nozahic,
Business Manager Pipe, Borouge Pte Ltd with a paper on "Developing
Superior Polyolefin Pipe Systems in Utility and Industrial Applications"
and Rick Folland, Application Marketing Manager for Borealis Polymers
N.V. when he discussed speciality PP-HMS Foam and PP blown film
applications.
Polyethylene has been the first choice material for pressurized
pipe distribution systems for over 35 years in many countries.
Borouge's Enhanced Polyethylene pipe grades are fully compounded
black and meet all international standards for pressure pipe systems.
Using Borouge's unique technology, new generation Borstar Enhanced
Polyethylene brings benefits to the well established generic PE
advantages making it a reliable, first choice for use in water and
gas pipes systems.
These benefits include improved processability and increased outputs
which translates into lower production costs and increased capacity
utilization for pipe producers; improved flexibility for easier
coiling, storage and installation; improved resistance to slow crack
growth giving added security for long term life and a high safety
record with no leakage.
The Borstar product mix exhibits five products for pipe: PE 100
HE 3490LS , PE 80 HE3570-LS and HE3440 PE40 LE 3405 and steel pipe
coating top coat HE3450. Borstar Enhanced Polyethylene offers the
extruder, converter, packer and retailer an unparalleled balance
of performance, productivity and versatility.
The performance attributes include a unique property balance in
a multitude of applications as well as design freedom enabled by
the unique surface and printing properties. In terms of productivity,
Borstar Enhanced Polyethylene allows easy, consistent processing
and converting and less scrap which can bring up to 30% savings.
The Borstar product mix exhibits four products for blown film applications.
These grades include Borstar FB2230 for packaging film e.g. shrink,
frozen food and security film; Enhanced Borstar FB2310 for coextrusion
and lamination; Borstar FB1460 for exclusive carrier bags, protection
film and pouches; and Borstar FB1520 for thin bags and pouches.
For the film producer Borstar Enhanced Polyethylene offers good
processability on conventional dies and screws, both in mono and
coextrusion processes, improved bubble stability with a more even
thickness profile as well as downgauging potential with thickness
flexibility.
For the food packer films made from Borstar Enhanced Polyethylene
offer a far better balance between stiffness and toughness than
conventional polyethylene. Impact properties are excellent, especially
at low temperatures. The most important benefit from Borstar Enhanced
Polyethylene films for the retailer is improved package integrity
with less broken packages in the freezers, as well as enhanced sales
appeal due to the inherent Borstar matt surface effect which permits
innovative design solutions..
With its state of the art US$ 1.2 billion petrochemical complex
in Ruwais, Borouge is well placed to capitalize on the demand for
Borstar Enhanced Polyethylene in the Middle East and Asia Pacific.
Inaugurated in October 2002, Ruwais is equipped with a 600,000 tonnes
ethylene cracker and two Borstar enhanced PE lines, each capable
of producing 225 000 tonnes of enhanced polyethylene. By the end
of 2005, the expansion plans to debottleneck the existing Borstar
enhanced polyethylene (PE) capacity from 450 000 to 580 000 tonnes
will be completed. Borouge will then be even better placed to satisfy
the market’s increasing demand.
About Borouge
Borouge's petrochemical complex in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi began operations
in late 2001 and was officially opened in October 2002. It produces
enhanced polyethylene products using Borealis' proprietary BORSTAR®
technology to meet the demanding needs of the high performance packaging
and pipe system industries in the Middle East and Asia Pacific.
Borouge is the result of synergistic joint venture between two
well-established corporations – Abu Dhabi National Oil Company
(ADNOC) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Borealis A/S of Denmark.
Borouge consists of two entities: A production company Abu Dhabi
Polymers Co. Ltd (Borouge) based in Abu Dhabi with production in
Ruwais, UAE, and a marketing company, Borouge Pte. Ltd based in
Singapore. Borouge has full-fledged sales offices in Abu Dhabi,
Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Mumbai and Lebanon along
