Schlumberger $16.7m Software donation to support Southern Alberta Institute of Technology Petroleum Engineering Programs

Posted: 31 March 2004

Business and geoscientific software will enhance research, education

Schlumberger Information Solutions (SIS) today announced that it has contributed a package of ECLIPSE reservoir simulation software and the popular Merak® Peep® economic evaluation and decline analysis application software to the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT).

Valued at $16.7-Million, the comprehensive package of geoscientific, reservoir simulation, economic evaluation, and decision analysis software applications will enhance the quality of education in geosciences, especially in oil and gas reservoir characterization and economics.

“The software will be used to broaden student exposure to state-of-the-art software currently used by companies in the energy industry,” says Dr. Faramarz Azar-Nejad, an instructor for SAIT’s Bachelor of Applied Petroleum Engineering Technology program. “Access to the latest geoscientific and business software not only helps students to better understand the theory and concepts in the classroom, it also prepares them to enter the oil and gas industry as highly productive technologists and engineers.”

“Schlumberger has a clear commitment to higher education internationally. Furthermore, this type of contribution helps our clients potentially save millions of dollars in training costs over time, as new graduates arrive on their doorsteps having already mastered key software applications. This is our latest effort in a strong tradition of commitment here in Canada and to the Calgary community at large,” said Catherine Hughes, manager of Schlumberger Oilfield Services-Canada.

The Schlumberger Worldwide University Software Program is part of a global Schlumberger initiative begun in 1998, with the idea of providing students and staff of Earth Sciences Departments all over the world with hands-on experience of E&P and simulation software. The program offers software developed and marketed by SIS to selected colleges, technical institutes and universities at minimal cost, providing three-year renewable licenses, software maintenance, training and technical support. Post-secondary institutions selected for the program can use the software to instruct students as part of a course curriculum or to conduct academic research. The software is not intended for commercial use by the post-secondary institution.
