Schlumberger integrated reservoir completions center

Posted: 22 April 2004

Expansion of existing Rosharon facility supports integrated completions engineering and perforating research

Schlumberger Oilfield Services officially opened the second phase of expansion of its Reservoir Completions Center (SRC), located in Rosharon, Texas, 30 miles south of Houston.

The 460-acre site now is home to the industry’s most advanced perforating research laboratory, an integrated completions testing facility and custom-engineering capacity.

“Expanded capabilities in perforating research and custom completion engineering capacity enhance our ability to design and test fit-for-purpose products at a rapid pace, helping to push the boundaries to develop better, more cost effective and integrated completion systems to maximize reservoir recovery,” said Prasanna Venkatesan, manager, Schlumberger Reservoir Completions Center.

Three New Facilities
At an open house, more than 200 guests participated in a 90-minute tour of the three new buildings, which included an explanation of various completion techniques, such as integrated completion design, reservoir monitoring and control, subsea productivity enhancement, completion system reliability testing and new perforating techniques to maximize productivity.

The new 193,000-square-foot well completion engineering building houses the majority of the engineering design teams who focus on core completions, flow management, perforating, and subsea and artificial lift systems. Each team has a light-duty lab and a heavy bay to assemble prototype systems.

The newly constructed 35,000-square-foot reliability-testing center expands the center’s capacity to perform tests under downhole conditions. This test center features four test bays, 10 test cells, five pressure vessels and small test wells. A control room is equipped with six computer-controlled consoles for point-and-click operation where clients can witness testing on their own equipment.

Near the northwest corner of the campus is the 10,000 square-foot productivity enhancement research facility, which is used to assist our clients in determining optimum perforating strategies for various reservoir conditions.

Schlumberger purchased the original 190-acre site in 1950. For the first 30 years it was used as a test ground for development of perforating shaped charges. In 1980, the first permanent buildings were constructed to house perforating engineering and manufacturing. In 1986, drill stem testing engineering moved to the campus; and in 1999 Schlumberger completed construction on the first phase of the expansion establishing this facility as its center point for engineering excellence in integrated completion and production systems.

Products developed at SRC are used around the world in a wide range of applications, from standard, low-temperature, sweet wells with normal pressure to the most hostile well environments. The center employs approximately 500 people.
