GE Energy to supply compressors for Norwegian gas processing plant

Posted: 04 May 2004

Part of the Ormen Lange Gas Field Development Project

GE Energy has received a contract of nearly 51 million euros from Norsk Hydro Production ASA to supply five compression trains for the Ormen Lange gas processing plant in Nyhamna, Norway, GE announced at Offshore Technology Conference 2004.

Norsk Hydro, which has the responsibility as operator for the development phase, is part of the license group for Ormen Lange, the largest gas field under development on the Norwegian continental shelf. The field is located 100 kilometers off the northwestern coast of Norway, at water depths of 800-1,100 meters.

Other members of the license group are AS Norsk Shell (having responsibility as the operator for the operational phase), Petoro ASA, Statoil ASA, BP Norway, and Esso Exploration and Production Norway.

GE Energy will provide three export trains, each consisting of two centrifugal compressors driven by 48-megawatt variable speed electric motors, and two recompression trains, each consisting of two centrifugal compressors driven by 7.3-megawatt variable speed electric motors.

The compressor contract was awarded under GE Energy's existing frame agreement with Norsk Hydro covering the supply of turbo compressors as well as parts and services for the Ormen Lange project.

The compressors will be manufactured and tested at GE Energy's oil and gas facilities located in Florence and Massa, Italy, including a 48-megawatt full-load load-string test on the export compression train. Shipment of the units will begin by June 30, 2005 and will continue until November 1, 2005. Commercial operation of the new gas processing plant is expected by October of 2007.

Gas from the Ormen Lange field will be carried through a pipeline to the onshore processing plant where the GE Energy equipment is to be installed After processing, the gas will be exported to the United Kingdom through a pipeline presently under construction, which will be the longest subsea export pipeline in the world.

GE Energy's oil and gas operations are based in Florence, Italy, the home of Nuovo Pignone, a long-time global leader in gas compression and turbo generation products. GE acquired Nuovo Pignone in 1994 and since then has continued to expand its oil and gas platform by acquiring or developing partnerships with other technology and experience leaders in the industry.
