Oil and Gas Companies Tap Upstream Applications from SAP for Business Success

Posted: 05 May 2004

Companies Including ONGC and Statoil Power Key Business Processes with Industry-Tailored Software from SAP

SAP AG announced the continuing success of its upstream industry-specific applications in the SAP for Oil & Gas industry solution portfolio.

These tailored applications are delivering significant benefits to the industry’s major players including ONGC (India) and Statoil (Norway). The announcement was made at the 8th Africa Oil and Gas Trade and Finance Conference in Marrakech, Morocco.

In one of the largest ever SAP go-lives in Asia, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has rolled out SAP for Oil & Gas solutions at more than 100 operative locations across its Western Offshore and Western Onshore operations in India.

Now serving more than 5,200 users, the integrated ERP suite provides a single companywide platform to integrate and optimize all business processes. Among the 22 SAP components now live at ONGC are the upstream applications SAP Remote Logistics Management to support the on-time supply of materials to remote offshore production locations and SAP Production Sharing Accounting to facilitate contractor cost calculation and cost recovery tracking.

“We chose SAP for its ability to cover our end-to-end business process needs,” said Mr. A. Kaviraj, executive director, ONGC. “With the SAP platform, all information on company activities is available online 24/7 to support tactical and strategic decision-making and all operations are tightly linked to increase productivity and reduce costs. For our customers, this means better service; for ONGC, it means a fundamental competitive advantage.”

Statoil, the leading producer of petroleum on the Norwegian continental shelf and one of the major suppliers of natural gas for the European market, was an early adopter of the SAP Joint Venture Accounting solution. The solution provides Statoil with reliable, real-time information on all of its venture activities.

“We have integrated and streamlined cash call and joint interest billing processes which contribute directly to easier handling, faster processing and collection of funds from Statoil’s venture partners,” said Kjell Petter Gilje, SAP advisor, Statoil. “Standard month-end joint venture processing enables Statoil to achieve faster month-end closing, leading to faster financial reporting at less cost.”

“SAP continues its strong commitment to supporting upstream oil and gas operators by providing solutions which directly address the key business processes in this capital-intensive industry,” said Peter Maier, vice president, Chemicals, Oil & Gas and Mining, SAP. “Combining SAP’s oil and gas business process expertise with the best technology available, SAP for Oil & Gas provides upstream operators the tools they need to improve visibility, integrate processes and enable business agility across all areas of operations.”
