ExxonMobil receives NACME 2004 Corporate Leadership Award

Posted: 06 May 2004

For its 30-year commitment to the organization, ExxonMobil was presented with NACME's (National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering) 2004 Corporate Leadership Award at the NACME's 30th anniversary gala held in New York City.

Lee Raymond, chairman and CEO of ExxonMobil, accepted the award on behalf of the company.

"ExxonMobil is honored to be recognized by NACME for the Corporate Leadership Award," said Raymond. "ExxonMobil is dedicated to educating a broad range of students about science, technology, engineering and mathematics and encouraging them to pursue careers in these fields. Through our 30 year relationship, ExxonMobil and NACME continue to work together to develop the next generation of engineers."

NACME's 30th anniversary gala took place on Tuesday, May 4, at the Waldorf-Astoria. Bill Cosby, entertainer and philanthropist, served as master of ceremonies for the event. The black-tie dinner allowed NACME to reflect on past accomplishments and acknowledge its key contributors. ExxonMobil is the all-time largest contributor to NACME having contributed more than $9 million over the past 30 years.

ExxonMobil supports education programs throughout the world, in addition to the company's involvement with NACME, and directs funding at improving student learning in science, technology, engineering and mathematics at all levels of learning. In 2003, ExxonMobil dedicated more than $37 million to education initiatives.

Improving education for women and minorities is essential to developing a diverse workforce. ExxonMobil considers diversity among its key, long-term business objectives, and has implemented strategies to achieve diversity in such areas as cultural experience, race, ethnicity, and gender. These strategies include education and mentoring programs, community outreach, scholarships and other financial support.

“This award demonstrates ExxonMobil's outstanding commitment to community service," said Dr. John Brooks Slaughter from NACME. "One of NACME's missions is to create equal opportunities for Americans in science, technology and engineering, and ExxonMobil's commitment to this mission is helping to increase diversity in the workplace.”

The goal of the gala was to help NACME raise $1 million to expand the NACME Scholars Program, which helps large numbers of African American, American Indian and Latino students realize their dreams of becoming leaders in the science, engineering and technology fields. NACME has provided financial aid to nearly 18,000 students at 160 colleges and universities since its inception in 1974.
