Saudi
Aramco to participate in first Saudi Arabian International Gas Conference
Posted: 12 May 2004
The Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco) will actively participate
in the First Saudi Arabian International Gas Conference, May 15
to 17, 2004, at the Eastern Province Chamber of Commerce and Industry
in Dammam.
Three of Saudi Aramco’s executives will be prominent participants
in the proceedings, highlighting Saudi Aramco’s contribution
to the national economy.
“This important event provides an excellent opportunity to
reinforce Saudi Aramco’s trend of successful partnerships
with international oil and gas companies and other private sector
companies,” said Abdallah S. Jum’ah, Saudi Aramco President
and CEO. “As the Kingdom’s industry expands and diversifies
under the wise policies of the government, gas plays an increasingly
important role, and Saudi Aramco looks forward to sharing its knowledge
and expertise in this critical area of national development. The
high level of participation by international and local businesses
underscores the widespread confidence in the Kingdom’s investment
environment.”
Saudi Aramco’s participation in the conference comes just
as the company has released details on plans to provide additional
hydrocarbons for more than 30 major industrial projects under way
throughout Saudi Arabia, with a total project value of more than
$30 billion.
The third-party projects, which include petrochemical, mineral
and cogeneration ventures, will come on-stream at various times
between now and 2010 and are expected to create more than 17,000
direct jobs, with more in the services and support areas, said Abd
Allah S. Al-Saif, senior vice president of Exploration and Producing
and Gas Operations.
The following approximate quantities of hydrocarbons and fuel and/or
feedstock have been allocated for these projects:
- Methane (natural gas) -- 1.2 billion standard cubic feet per
day (scfd).
- Ethane -- 440 million scfd.
- Propane -- 270,000 barrels per day (bpd).
- Butane -- 115,000 bpd.
- Natural gasoline -- 75,000 bpd.
Most of the projects are under development or under construction.
Several are in the detail-design stage, and one has started commissioning.
The sites include Jubail, Yanbu‘, Rabigh, Dammam and Riyadh
“Saudi Aramco is committed to continue playing a major role
in the Kingdom’s economic future,” Al-Saif said, commenting
on the company’s role in the third-party projects. “We
are also pleased to note that these industrial ventures will not
only contribute to Saudi Arabia’s long-term economic prosperity
but will also create thousands of meaningful jobs for the domestic
work force.”
He added: “While the figures highlighted are approximate,
they nonetheless indicate the order of magnitude of one area of
Saudi Aramco’s commitment to the national economy.”
The company’s existing gas allocations to local industries
already make a substantial contribution to the Kingdom’s economy,
accounting for about 15 percent of Saudi Arabia’s gross domestic
product (GDP) and creating more than 40,000 high-value jobs.
In 2003, Saudi Aramco’s deliveries of sales gas (methane)
to domestic customers averaged 4.65 trillion Btu per day, and deliveries
of ethane averaged 760 billion Btu daily.
As part of the Gas Conference’s first day, at the “Session
One: The New Upstream Gas Agreements,” Al-Saif, will discuss
Saudi Aramco’s role in the Rub’ Al-Khali Upstream Gas
Projects, which join Saudi Aramco with a number of international
oil companies to search for non-associated gas in the Kingdom’s
Rub’ Al-Khali basin.
On the same day, Saudi Aramco’s Vice President of New Business
Development, Isam Al-Bayat, will take part in a panel discussion
during the conference’s “Session Three: Emerging Investment
Opportunities in Major Power and Desalination Projects.”
On the conference’s second day, Saudi Aramco’s Vice
President of Exploration, Khalid Al-Falih, will chair “Session
5-A: Emerging Investment Opportunities in Primary Upstream Petrochemical
Projects.”
Saudi Aramco is a major sponsor of the conference, and will have
a display available throughout the conference for attendees to learn
more about Saudi Aramco’s scope of operations, capabilities,
and involvement in the Kingdom’s vibrant gas sector.
