PGS
opens new seismic data processing center in Rio de Janeiro
Posted: 25 May 2004
Petroleum Geo-Services ASA announced today that it has opened a
major new Seismic Data Processing Center in Rio de Janeiro. With
this center, PGS will be the only seismic contractor able to provide
an in-country solution for large-scale projects, many of which require
the enhanced subsurface imaging afforded by compute intensive applications
such as Pre-Stack Time Migration and Pre-Stack Depth Migration.
The technology infrastructure of the new PGS center, comprised
of 519 IBM eServer xSeries 335s, was provided by IBM Brazil and
it is currently one of the largest supercomputing clusters running
the Linux operating system in South America. The center is comprised
of 1024 Intel Xeon processors that deliver 6 tflops of compute capacity,
a holoSeis visualization system and a dedicated link to all of PGS’
R&D and support resources at our Houston Hub Center.
“The Rio Center is a significant additional component to
our service portfolio for Brazil,” said Mark Wilkinson, President
of PGS’ Marine Geophysical NSA business unit. “This
center will allow domestic and foreign operators to tap into the
expertise of PGS geoscientists to maximize the value of producing
or marginal assets as well as the opportunity to fully evaluate
the exploration potential of a given area.” Mark added, “Providing
these services in country also has the added benefits of allowing
processing projects to be managed without leaving the country and
satisfying local content commitments.”
“IBM is pleased to partner with PGS and to provide them with
a leading-edge infrastructure for seismic processing that will accelerate
the adoption of high performance computing in the region,"
said Marcelo Braunstein, Manager of Linux Solutions for IBM Latin
America. "Our solution combines parallel processing with an
excellent price/performance ratio, which is characteristic of Linux-based
systems. This will certainly ensure a competitive advantage for
PGS."
Petroleum Geo-Services is a technologically focused oilfield service
company principally involved in two businesses: Geophysical Operations
and Production Operations.
PGS acquires, processes and markets 3D, time-lapse and multi-component
seismic data. These data are used by oil and gas companies in the
exploration for new reserves, the development of existing reservoirs,
and the management of producing oil and gas fields. PGS’ advanced
geophysical technologies allow oil and gas companies to better characterize
and monitor their reservoirs in order to enhance production and
ultimate recovery of hydrocarbons.
In its Production Operations business, PGS owns four floating production,
storage and offloading systems (“FPSOs”) and operates
numerous offshore production facilities for oil and gas companies.
FPSOs permit oil and gas companies to produce from offshore fields
more quickly and cost effectively. PGS operates on a worldwide basis
with headquarters in Oslo, Norway and Houston, Texas.
IBM is the world's largest information technology company, with
80 years of leadership in helping businesses innovate. Drawing on
resources from across IBM and key Business Partners, IBM offers
a wide range of services, solutions and technologies that enable
customers, large and small, to take full advantage of the new era
of e-business.
