BJ Services introduces new well cleaning system

Posted: 27 May 2004

BJ Services announced the introduction of the BJ Well Cleaning System, a new system that removes thin, low-permeable filter cake consisting of lost circulations materials, emulsions and other unwanted materials that can have adverse effects on the complete recovery of drilling and completion fluids and the environment. The cleaning system removes mineral oils, organic oils and thread compounds, as well as chemical residue, leaving a clean water wet metal surface. By using BJ’s cleaning system, operators can prevent the wellbore from becoming lined with debris that can rob a well of much of its production capability.

System saves hours of circulating downtime
The system saves hours of circulating downtime, completion fluid filtration and fishing problems. One added benefit is that because there are minimum contaminants, such as formation fines and emulsions for drilling mud particles, there is little formation damage.

Suite of wellbore clean-up tools used in conjunction with BJ Well Wash
The BJ Well Cleaning System is comprised of a unique suite of four mechanical wellbore clean-up tools that are designed to clean casing, and remove debris from the well during clean-up operations. To achieve optimum results, the BJ Well Cleaning System is typically used in conjunction with BJ’s Well Wash™ displacement chemicals to ensure that the fluid system is as clean as possible.

The first component of the Well Cleaning System is the BJ Fluid-actuated Circulating Sub/Riser Jetting Tool, a multiple activation tool that facilitates increased annular velocities during well clean-up and displacement operations. The jetting/washing action of the tool ensures that sufficient fluid velocity in large annular areas above liner tops or casing size changes to efficiently remove drilling fluid material and particulate debris from the well.

Designed to scrape the casing wall and remove cement mud, scale, paraffin and other debris during displacement operations is the BJ TruGage Casing Scraper. With its 360º coverage, it is also ideal for use when drilling out bridge plugs and removing casing burrs during drilling operations.

The BJ Downhole Debris Filter (DDF) essentially vacuums foreign material from the wellbore during displacement completion, fishing, milling and workover operations. By using this tool, a clean fluid environment is ensured without fear of metal or other solid objects being left behind to damage downhole assemblies. The field-proven DDF features a unique internal debris filter and retention chamber to trap material circulated from the wellbore. This tool provides reverse circulation in the bottomhole tool area while pumping down the inside of the tubing. No additional time is required to reverse from the surface.

The final element of the BJ Well Cleaning System is the RuffPup, a casing brush tool that features the Brislock System. The RuffPup is a mechanical wellbore clean-up device that cleans the inside of casing during displacement operations. For optimal results – particularly in highly deviated wells – the tool features interchangeable, self-centralizing full-gauge stabilizers to promote proper and equal pressure of the brush sleeve on well tubulars.

Its special alloy bristle sleeve and heavy-duty API tool-steel body is designed to ensure 360º coverage in the casing at all times. Hardened and tempered spring-steel bristles are attached to the alloy sleeve by the patented Brislock system. Named for its ability to lock the bristles into place, it virtually eliminates the possibility of detaching during downhole operations. Optimum length, density and stiffness are assured to resist deformation and wear.

Well Cleaning System Achieves Results in Gulf of Mexico and Norway
To date, BJ’s Well Cleaning System has been extremely successful. “We have carried out a number of wellbore clean-up operations using the Well Cleaning System in conjunction with our Well Wash displacement chemicals in the United States and Norway,” said Paul van Laar, completion fluids manager - United Kingdom for BJ Services. “We recently introduced the system to the European market, and have utilised the system very successfully in Norway on behalf of Statoil,” he added.

BJ Services Company is a leading provider of pressure pumping and related oilfield services to the petroleum industry. The company operates in every major oil and gas producing region.
