awarded second contract by Geophysical Surveying Company Ltd
of Japan

COLT- K Drilling System Integral to Coastal Drilling Campaign
in Japan
AnTech Ltd, a specialist design engineering and manufacturing
company serving the upstream oil and gas industries, has been awarded
a contract by Geophysical Surveying Company Ltd. to supply a COLT-K,
a custom drilling system, for use in its five-year drilling campaign
in Japan that is scheduled to commence later this year.
COLT- K Drills Boreholes to Identify Potential Nuclear Waste Disposal
Sites
This contract represents the second time since 2002 that Geophysical
Surveying Company Ltd. has commissioned and purchased the custom
COLT-K drilling system from AnTech. For the past two years, Geophysical
Surveying Company Ltd has successfully used the COLT-K drilling
assembly to conduct field-testing.
Geophysical Surveying Company drilled 300m with well inclinations
of 30-35°. The COLT-K successfully measured directional and
drilling information while drilling. For example, load and torque
measurements have been very useful to continue effective drilling
operations, and have identified lost circulation by measuring downhole
pressure.
Boreholes will be drilled in a number of sites around Japan to
obtain geological information on potential nuclear waste disposal
sites. The rock samples will be gathered at various sites are being
scientifically analysed in Japan to select the best site for the
safe storage of radioactive waste. With its heavy dependence on
nuclear power, it is critical that the radioactive waste generated
by the large number of nuclear power stations in the country is
safely and permanently disposed of under the sea.
AnTech delivered the first custom COLT-K system to Geophysical
Surveying Company in 2002. Since then, AnTech has been providing
ongoing support in the form of training and updates.
According to AnTech, this additional contract award for a second
COLT-K system is very encouraging. “For AnTech, it is significant
because it demonstrates the effectiveness and reliability of the
system as a real drilling innovation,” said Toni Miszewski,
Managing Director of AnTech Ltd. “It also means that we have
successfully extended our market to Japan, as well as crossing
over to an additional industry outside of the oil and gas industry,” he
added.
Competition for Contract Fierce
The original contract award to AnTech came about as the result
of a yearlong international search spearheaded by Geophysical
Surveying Company in 2001 to source an experienced design-engineering
firm that specialises in drilling systems.
To select the company to design and manufacture the custom drilling
system, a delegation made up of geologists and engineers embarked
on a world-wide tour of drilling design specialists based in the
US, Switzerland, Germany and the UK.
The delegation, made up of several Tokyo-based organisations,
included the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry
(CRIEPI), which is the primary sponsor of the nuclear waste disposal
site initiative.
Mining engineering specialist Sumiko Consultants Co. Ltd. and
oilfield specialist Geophysical Surveying Co. Ltd. are supporting
CRIEPI by providing related services. Collectively, the group is
dedicated to identifying an appropriate costal site around Japan
to eventually dispose of radioactive waste
Since commissioning AnTech to design and manufacture the custom
COLT-K, AnTech received a Special Meritorious Award for Engineering
Innovation 2002 in the Drilling – Downhole Category from
Hart’s E & P magazine for the original COLT drilling
system in recognition of the system’s ability to significantly
improve productivity.
