Oilman discovers new find as Scotland 's Entrepreneur Of The Year 2004
Posted: 25 June 2004
Bill Gammell, Chief Executive of Cairn Energy plc, has been awarded the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year Award 2004. Gammell, who evolved Cairn Energy from a series of oil and gas partnerships in the 1980s to a global business with turnover of £155m in 2003, fought competition from 45 of the country's finest entrepreneurs to pick up the top award at the banquet at the Glasgow Hilton last night.
Gammell now has the opportunity to join an elite band of entrepreneurs from around the globe to compete for the World Entrepreneur Of The Year title in Monte Carlo in May 2005.
With his unique eye for innovation, Gammell was shortlisted for the award in the business products category. He was presented with both the business products award and the overall Scottish award in recognition of his success in building a high performance company and his dedication to his vision for the company, even when times were difficult.
Substantial investments in South East Asia over the past five years have seen Cairn Energy grow to be one of the largest producers of India 's overall energy supply and Bangladesh 's gas supply. A long-term believer in adding value through exploration, Gammell's saw this happen earlier this year with the discovery of two significant oil wells in Rajasthan. In accepting the overall Scottish award, Bill Gammell said, "Winning the Entrepreneur Of The Year is a terrific recognition for the outstanding team of people at Cairn. Business success is achieved through the drive, initiative, energy and application of people and I am only fortunate to be the leader of the team." Douglas Nisbet, managing partner for Ernst & Young in Scotland , said, ‘Bill Gammell's success tonight reflects his drive and determination to succeed.
His innovative approach and his ability to motivate and inspire others around him, even in today's tough economic climate, makes him a worthy winner for Scotland and a fine role model for other businesses to follow.
On behalf of everyone at Ernst & Young, I would like to congratulate him and wish him luck in the national awards in October.' For more information see http://www.eoy.co.uk/
