Safety milestone for J.Ray in Qatar

Posted: 5 July 2004

J. Ray completes over three years of “safe” work for RasGas

J. Ray McDermott announced today it has completed over three years of work, without a safety related incident resulting in time away from work (no Lost Time Accidents) on the RasGas Offshore Expansion Projects.

“This is a major safety milestone and a great achievement for J. Ray McDermott’s operations in Jebel Ali,” explained Stewart Mitchell, J. Ray’s Project Manager for RasGas projects.

The goal of zero Lost Time Incidents and zero personal injuries is one of the key criteria against which the success of the projects are measured. The work undertaken on the projects over the last three years contributing to this achievement, has involved fabrication of platform facilities at Jebel Ali; a series of installation campaigns offshore Qatar for the respective platform and pipeline facilities; and sub-contractors performing work at various locations in Qatar and the UAE.

A safety recognition ceremony was recently held at Jebel Ali to acknowledge this excellent achievement, hosted by representatives from J. Ray McDermott and Ras Laffan LNG company senior management. “Both myself and John McGettigan, Project Manager RasGas Company Ltd., would like to congratulate all personnel who have worked on the projects to date – it is the teams’ dedicated focus on safety that has resulted in this impressive milestone.”

“With three more years to run on the Expansion Projects we are dedicated to maintaining this safety target,” said Mitchell.

The Offshore Expansion Contract consists of turnkey project management, design engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation, hook-up and mechanical completion of four 2,200MT wellhead decks, associated intra field pipelines and submarine cables. Two major 38” diameter trunklines from the offshore facilities to the onshore plant, along with associated onshore tie-ins complete the project work scope.

The first platform, WH7, was successfully mechanically completed and handed over to RasGas in January 2004 – along with the first 94km offshore and 5km onshore 38” pipeline. The second 105km 38” trunkline from WH4 platform to the onshore facilities is currently scheduled for installation during the summer of 2004 for the AKG project, ten months ahead of schedule.

“We are currently fabricating the WH4 and WH5 platforms at our Jebel Ali yard, which are scheduled to be installed offshore Qatar next year,” explained Mitchell. “The engineering design of the fourth platform, WH9, is in progress and fabrication will commence early in 2005.“

J. Ray McDermott's Middle East operation has fabricated and installed more than 620 structures and 2,600 miles of pipelines in the Arabian Gulf and India since 1960. Today, the Middle East area headquarters, fabrication yard and marine base occupy 60 hectares (150 acres) in the Jebel Ali Free Zone in Dubai.
