Technip successfully delivers world’s first cell spar to Kerr-McGee in the Gulf of Mexico
Posted: 21 July 2004
Technip announces Technip Offshore Inc.– its U.S. entity based in Houston, Texas – has successfully completed and delivered a cell spar to Kerr-McGee Oil & Gas Corp. for the Red Hawk project in Garden Banks block 877 of the Gulf of Mexico. Red Hawk is a 50/50 partnership between Kerr-McGee and Devon, with Kerr-McGee as operator.
The 560-feet (171 meter) long hull structure, composed of seven 20-feet (6-meter) diameter rolled steel tubes, was engineered and built in the United States in several sections at Technip’s Gulf Marine Fabricators in Ingleside, Texas. It has been installed in 5,300 feet of water in Kerr-McGee’s deepest field development to date.
Technip’s scope of work for the project also included EPCI delivery of the topsides, also fabricated at Gulf Marine Fabricators, offshore installation of hull, moorings and topsides as well as offshore flowlines and umbilical installation, export SCR installation, and commissioning. The flowlines were fabricated at the Technip Spoolbase in Mobile, Alabama and the umbilical at Technip’s Duco facility in Channelview, Texas. Offshore installation work was carried out by Technip’s state of the art installation vessel, the Deep Blue.
Production started as scheduled July 15, 2004 and is expected to ramp up to 120 million cubic feet of natural gas per day. This innovative spar has the ability to be modified for handling up to 300 million cubic feet per day. Technip completed delivery of the cell spar in record time of 22 months from contract award in September 2002.
This cell spar is the latest generation and an innovative extension of the Technip range of spars products that can operate in very deep waters. Kerr-McGee was also the first one to use the classic spar at the Neptune field and the first one to use the truss spar at the Nansen field, followed by Boomvang and Gunnison in the Gulf of Mexico.
With a workforce of about 19,000 persons, Technip ranks among the top five corporations in the field of oil, gas and petrochemical engineering, construction and services. Headquartered in Paris, the Group is listed in New York and Paris. The Group’s main engineering and business centers are located in France, Italy, Germany, the UK, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands, the United States, Brazil, Abu-Dhabi, China, India, Malaysia and Australia.
