GAC handles ‘Jumbo Javelin’ – the world’s strongest heavy lift vessel – on her maiden voyage
Posted: 1 August 2004
GAC Shipping proved it has the muscle to handle the Jumbo Javelin, dubbed the ‘strongest ship in the world’, when the heavy lift vessel called at Ras Laffan port, Qatar recently.
Mr. Shanaka Fernando, Business Manager of Shipping Services, GAC Qatar says that GAC is proud to be entrusted with handling the 12,870 DWT vessel on her first commercial voyage.
Designed to carry heavy and special loads, Jumbo Javelin, owned by Jumbo Shipping, has the greatest lifting capability of its kind in the world at 1,600 tonnes. Previous limits for such vessels were 1,000-1,200 tonnes. It also features a bridge positioned off-centre, allowing the ship to carry reactor columns of more than 150 meters length.
“For its inaugural port call the vessel shipped 648 packages totaling 8,592 cubic meters on board, with a single giant package of 203 cubic meters. Handling such a large vessel brings its own challenges, but leveraging GAC’s extensive expertise in handling all kinds of port calls, we were able to execute the turnaround smoothly.”
GAC Qatar’s team assisted the vessel which discharged the voluminous shipment within three days, using the vessel’s own special gear. The heavy lift and project cargo was consigned to Ras Gas, one of the main exporters of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), for their expansion project.
With gas and oil accounting for over 90% of Qatar’s exports and government income, RasGas was established to produce (LNG) and other related hydrocarbon products from Qatar’s huge offshore field, North Field, the largest offshore non-associated natural gas field in the world.
“It has been a pleasure handling the world’s strongest ship. We are now looking forward to her next call at the port in August,” says Mr. Fernando.
