The African Energy & Mining Safari

Posted: 7 August 2004

Pooling Resources for Sustainable Development

Energy is of key importance for development in Africa and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) intends to use energy as a launching pad for Africa into the global economy. The NEPAD action plan facilitates the lifting of geographical restrictions on electricity trade across Africa, in order to encourage cross-border sharing and operations and also to realise the vision of a pan-African electricity grid.

Investments in mining projects tend to be large and NEPAD recognises that Africa's remarkable natural resources need to be at the core of any realistic sustainable development plan. African governments have specifically highlighted mineral resources because they believe that investment in this sector can help the continent escape poverty, improve health and education, and build sustainable communities.

Although southern and eastern African countries have made great headway in cross-border connection, pooling and integration, the power and mining industries in these regions still face a number of challenges.

Now in their sixth year, EAPIC and EAMIC 2004 introduce a number of exciting innovations, including two co-located events: SAPIC (Southern African Power Industry Convention) and SAMIC (Southern African Mining Industry Convention). In 2004 participants will have the opportunity to examine the factors that retard or accelerate development and synergies in these industries in an interactive and vendor-neutral environment.

The African Power and Mining Safari
This show has been successful in the eastern African market and is for the first time extended to southern Africa. We have therefore decided to enhance the event by expanding to additional locations – Luanda, Angola and Kinshasa, DRC, in addition to Nairobi, Kenya. ‘The African Energy & Mining Safari’ will enable participants/exhibitors to greatly enhance their visibility to important energy and mining markets, while still only requiring one week of time out of the office! Exhibitors can decide to participate in one, two or three locations!
