Expansion of GAC’s African port coverage
Posted: 9 August 2004
GAC has inked its latest Global Network Agent agreement with Seaforth Shipping, Kenya, continuing the expansion of its port coverage across the African continent.
In addition to GAC’s own offices throughout North, West and South Africa, the GAC-Seaforth alliance now enables GAC to establish a strong operational presence in the Eastern African states of Kenya and Tanzania, with effect from 1 August 2004.
Tapping into East Africa market
East African ports have seen progressive and continuous growth in cargo traffic performance over the past three years and GAC is geared to meet the growing demand for port and ship agency services, says Mr. Lars P. Heisselberg, Group Vice President, GAC Shipping.
"Mombasa and Dar es Salaam are transforming into important transport arteries for international trade, especially in trans-shipment to the adjacent Indian Ocean islands. Besides the significant increase in trans-shipment traffic, the cargo boom is also fuelled by domestic cargo demands from hinterland states bordering Kenya and Tanzania.”
Both Dar es Salaam and Mombasa are important trade partners to the Middle East with two sailings a month going out of the UAE alone, carrying cargos of cars, tyres and automobile spare parts for resale in the East African markets.
With GAC’s decades worth of shipping expertise and Seaforth’s extensive local knowledge and industry contacts, the GAC-Seaforth alliance will bring a higher level of ship and port agency services to Principals calling at the East African ports, says Mr. Michael A. Dunford, Seaforth’s Executive Director.
Extensive geographical coverage of port agency services
In the past 12 months, GAC has rapidly expanded its global network of agents to complement its own port coverage in the Middle East, the Indian Subcontinent, Asia, Africa and key locations in the Americas, Europe, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
Its global network agents today include Adsteam (Australia, New Zealand, Oceania), Unipros (Republic of Korea), Kudrat Maritime (Malaysia), RUR (USA East & Gulf Coasts), Wilford & McKay (Panama), Vensport (Venezuela) Ultramar (Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay) and Wilsonsons (Brazil).
