Aggreko Power supports growth on Batam Island , Indonesia

Posted: 12 August 2004

  • Aggreko has installed a 22MW / 20kV temporary power package to supplement utility supply on the Indonesian Island of Batam.
  • Package was installed at two locations; 15MW at Batu Ampar, situated Northwest on the island and 7MW at Sekupang on the Western part of the Island .
  • Power will supplement the grid and benefit an estimated 600,000 residents on the Island.

Aggreko plc, global leader in providing temporary power and temperature control services today announced that it has provided 22MW/20kV temporary power for Pelayan Listrik Nasional (PT PLN); a subsidiary of the Indonesian national utility company, PT PLN Persero on Batam Island, Indonesia.

Known as the industrial island of Indonesia , Batam is located 20 km Southeast of Singapore and is only 40 minute trip by high speed transit ship.

The 22MW power provided by Aggreko will supplement the utility supply on Batam Island and consists of a 7MW package installed at Batu Ampar on the Northwest of the island, and a 15MW package installed at Sekupang on the West coast of Batam.

Industry on Batam Island has grown considerably over the past two decades and population has increased from 31,800 in 1978 to an estimated 600,000 today with a further 1.1 million foreign visitors arriving every year. This has resulted in a rise in electricity consumption of approximately 10 to 15 percent annually placing more and more demand on the Batam utility network.

To meet with the growing energy demand, Aggreko was requested to provide temporary power whilst PT PLN could undertake improvements to the network and new turbines were being installed and commissioned.

To alleviate power constraints immediately, Aggreko installed a 3MW power package within 48hours at Batu Ampar. Over the next two days an additional 4MW was installed and commissioned onsite, operational by 19th June 2004 . Aggreko supplied a comprehensive power solution including generators, transformers, fuel tanks, and cabling.

The 15MW/20kV power package was installed in Sekupang, home of the busiest seaport on the Island . This package was initially installed as 10MW and was subsequently increased to 15MW to meet with demand. By 29th June 2004 the entire 15MW power package was operational in Sekupang, taking the overall total of power supplied on the Island to 22MW.

Stephen Dunlop , Aggreko Regional Sales Director said, “We are delighted to be able to support PT PLN, whilst they upgrade their grid system to benefit the people of Batam. It is forward thinking and proactive planning which leads an island like this to stay ahead of the game and avoid long term inconvenient power shortages. Aggreko looks forward to completing this contract successfully and working with PT PLN again.”
