Honeywell technology solution helps to modernise Polish oil refinery

Advanced process control project for Grupa Lotos generates shorter payback than warranted by the contract
Honeywell has completed the third phase of an advanced process control project for Grupa Lotos SA, a leading oil refining company in Gdansk, Poland.
A joint-stock company, Grupa Lotos manages the second largest refinery in Poland. Based on the Honeywell distributed control system (DCS) platform, the process control solution affects the refinery’s crude distillation (CDU) area. A post-implementation audit confirms that the achieved economic advantages have exceeded the values warranted by the project.
“We selected Honeywell for this project to drive quality improvements and to achieve greater profitability at the refinery in the future,” said Marek Sokolowski, vice president of the board and operations director of Grupa Lotos SA. “Honeywell’s Profit Suite technology offers unparalleled financial and operational benefits for our company, and we’re confident that Honeywell can continue to deliver solutions that meet evolving market demands.”
Together with other process improvements on the CDU area, this project has enabled Grupa Lotos SA to improve throughput and to meet the highest quality targets in the marketplace. Honeywell Profit® Suite has improved operating stability and constraint handling, increased the yield of higher-value products and reduced energy consumption at the facility.
The refinery modernization project began in 2000 and is largely credited with propelling Grupa Lotos SA into the circle of other modern European refineries. Polish and UK-based consultants and engineers worked on the project.
“Grupa Lotos wants to compete at the highest level of the refining marketplace and we are pleased to deliver advanced control solutions to help them meet their objectives,” said Jerry Walker, vice president and general manager of Honeywell Process Solutions EMEA. “Honeywell delivered the solution with a payback of three months, which clearly demonstrates the quality of our integrated products, methodology and dedicated resources.”
Honeywell Profit Suite technology solutions consists of combinations of standard Honeywell products and engineering services that together solve unique business problems. A key component of Honeywell’s Experion™ Process Knowledge System (PKS), Profit Suite can be expanded to provide advanced technology solutions as business needs and objectives change. Benefits of the solutions include greater profitability, improved plant safety and increased employee productivity.
Grupa Lotos SA refines and processes crude oil, and sells and distributes a wide range of petroleum products, including lead-free petrol, diesel oils, heating oils, aviation fuel, lubricating oils, asphalts and gases.
