Hamworthy’s vacuum toilet quietly contributes cost savings

Posted: 18 August 2004

Hamworthy has launched a new deck and bulkhead-mounted vacuum flush toilet designed for ease of installation, low spares costs, low water consumption and quiet operation

“Our new toilet model has been designed with ease of installation and maintenance in mind,” said Mark Beavis, marine sales manager for Hamworthy Wastewater Systems. “It is also mechanically simple, operationally reliable and contemporarily styled.”

The AVT 04 range of vacuum toilets has been developed over the past 18 months from the company’s previous model. As well as building on its predecessor’s most successful features, all the components for the new model have been re-designed to ensure robust and efficient operation.

Hamworthy’s first order for its new AVT 04B model is for 150 units to be installed on board the relief vessel Africa Mercy. Following this, the company has now secured three-year contracts with the Korean shipyards Hyundai Mipo, Shina and STX.

Design features

The AVT 04 is a modular system incorporating an independent sewage discharge valve, flush control mechanism, and memory push button. “It is obviously cheaper to replace one of these elements than to replace a complete integrated system,” Mr Beavis said. “This saves our customers’ money. Further savings can also be made because the system has been designed with a low-through life cost as a paramount consideration.”

To meet the requirements of the replacement market as well as the new-build market, thoughtful design is a key element of the AVT 04 unit. For example: the back section of the toilet is 2mm larger than a conventional unit so that when competitor systems are replaced the old joints are disguised. Mounting centres and water connections are identical to competitor units allowing for direct change-out without the need for any alterations to the compartment. A series of step-up and step-down pipe adaptor pieces are available to meet all pipe system requirements and special requirements can be accommodated.

Efficiency

The AVT 04 system uses air to drive waste through the toilet and vacuum piping to the treatment tank or intermediate collection tank. This ensures quiet operation, which is an important consideration for neighbouring cabins. By using approximately 1 litre of water per flush, a dramatic reduction of wastewater is achieved in comparison with conventional units.

The new white china toilet is equipped with a vacuum circuit that automatically controls the flush cycle. It is activated by pressing and releasing the integral push-button located at the rear of the bowl. No electrical supply is required. The new unit has a minimal space requirement and can be maintained in-situ. It is suitable for installation on all types of vessels.
