ExxonMobil and Earth 911 promote environmental protection through motor oil recycling

Posted: 7 September 2004

To help promote used motor oil recycling and environmental education, ExxonMobil today announced an alliance with the nation's environmental information network, Earth 911. The agreement provides support to Earth 911 in areas of promotional outreach, technological support, product labeling initiatives and program funding.

Earth 911, a unique partnership between the public and private sectors, is recognized for providing community-specific environmental information to the public and to local, state and federal government agencies. Earth 911 empowers communities by providing localized information and resources such as recycling and waste management that improve the quality of life.

"This alliance will help inform consumers about the importance of used motor oil recycling, as well as the proper way to do it," said Charlie Rau, global environmental advisor, ExxonMobil Lubricants & Specialties. "For instance, used motor oil can take on a whole second 'life' through re-use as a fuel in environmentally sound cement kilns or power plants, thus, conserving natural resources and helping to protect our environment."

"ExxonMobil's support of Earth 911 demonstrates its commitment to environmental stewardship," said Tim Gormley, president, Earth 911. "With this support, we will be able to further enhance community outreach initiatives to help consumers learn how and where to recycle used motor oil and educate them about the environmental impact of improperly disposal of motor oil."

Under the agreement, a variety of Mobil- and Exxon-branded products will feature the Earth 911 logo and a link will be created to Earth 911's Internet Web site -- www.earth911.org, from the Mobil 1 motor oil Web site -- www.mobil1.com.

Earth 911's television, print and radio Public Service Announcements will feature the Mobil 1 logo and continue to provide content featuring information about proper dispositions for used motor oil, identification of approved collection sites, and information about used oil responsibility and management.

Founded in 1991, the Earth 911 Public and Private Sector Partnership assists the public with free "call-to-action" awareness programs. Through Internet Web sites -- www.cleanup.org or www.earth911.org, and a toll-free bilingual hotline -- 1-800-CLEANUP, environmental information and resources are provided by local governments, and readily available for all communities across the United States and parts of Canada.
