How customer requirements have shaped state-of-the-art portable gas detectors from BW Technologies
Posted: 12 September 2004
Gas detection equipment users have not been shy when it comes to expressing their wishes. The state-of-the-art gas detection products from BW Technologies are a direct reflection of these customer requirements.
BW Technologies Ltd, is one of the world's largest makers of gas-detection equipment. Headquartered in Calgary, Canada, the company's products range from disposable, zero-maintenance personal hydrogen sulfide (H2S) detectors, to permanently installed gas detection systems, to the GasAlertMicro, the world's most popular confined space gas detector.
The GasAlertClip Extreme personal, zero-maintenance gas detector is one of the Company's most successful products. Prior to the introduction of the GasAlertClip family of personal gas detectors, H2S monitors tended to be large, hard to use, expensive, and required daily or weekly calibration adjustment. Weighing only 97 g (3.5 oz.) the GasAlertClip Extreme is rugged, compact and equipped with a highly water-resistant IP-67 housing. Other features include a built-in shockproof boot, high-tension stainless steel alligator clip, built-in vibrator alarm, loud audible alarm and bright LED alarm indicators. Standard features also include the ability to retain and download event exposure data. Most importantly for the owners of these instruments, once activated, the instruments run continuously for two-years completely without the need for calibration adjustment. With over 125,000 GasAlertClip Extremes currently in service, the marketplace has strongly embraced the design. With a published list price of only $240.00 USD, it's seen as an extremely cost effective choice.
The GasAlertMicro is a compact, four-channel confined space gas detector for the measurement of combustible gas, oxygen, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide. The GasAlertMicro offers cutting-edge features and capabilities at a fraction of the cost of previous generations of confined space instruments. In many cases, the $695.00 USD cost for a brand new four-channel GasAlertMicro is less than the cost of replacing the sensors and battery pack in an existing instrument bought only two or three years previously.
Simultaneously displaying oxygen, hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide and percent LEL combustibles present, the GasAlertMicro is ideally suited to a wide range of applications, including hazmat response, confined space entry, search and rescue, and post-inspection fire safety. With over 50,000 GasAlertMicros currently in service, the instrument has helped to redefine customer expectations for dependability, ease-of-use, affordability and advanced features for confined space instruments.
The GasAlertMicro and GasAlertClip Extreme instruments are only one part of the BW approach to simplifying and reducing the costs of gas detection instrument ownership. Regulatory agencies and national performance standards are putting increasing emphasis on periodic testing, calibration, and documentation to ensure gas detection instruments are properly maintained. The MicroDock 2 calibration, test and record storage system provides automated calibration and bump testing for the GasAlertMicro, GasAlert Extreme and GasAlertClip families of gas detectors. Each system comes complete with BW Fleet Manager software that allows real-time communication and download of test results from multiple, remotely located MicroDock 2 systems. MicroDock 2 systems are expandable to include up to ten Docking Modules, in any combination. Docking Modules for the GasAlertMicro are optionally available with the capability to charge as well as test rechargeable version instruments.
The BW MicroDock 2 system automatically tests and documents proper performance. Simply slip the instrument to be tested into the MicroDock 2, and push the "Test" button. The MicroDock 2 administers test gas to the instrument, verifies the proper performance of the sensors and alarms, updates this information to the instrument's on-board memory, and stores the results in a separate, downloadable archive on an MMC card in the MicroDock Base Station.
The MicroDock 2 is the world's most advanced, compact and affordable automatic calibration and testing system for the world's most popular family of gas detectors: Simply put, BW products are the best value in gas detectors.
