Saudi Aramco Company participates in SPE event
Posted: 20 October 2004
More than 60 delegates from Saudi Aramco and Aramco Services Co. (ASC) joined about 10,500 exploration and producing professionals at the recent Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) in Houston.
The ATCE is SPE’s flagship event and is considered by many to be the most prestigious and important of its kind in the upstream oil and gas industry. This year, with its theme, "A World of Evolving Technology," the ATCE marked its 80th anniversary.
The technical program of the conference, held Sept. 26-29, consisted of more than 450 technical papers presented in 73 sessions. The four-day event was designed to address the technical and professional needs of engineers, scientists, academics and other professionals from the industry.
Saudi Aramco professionals were authors of more than a dozen technical papers that covered diverse subjects such as well cementing, gas-well performance, stimulation of horizontal wells and processing of well logs. Three Saudi Aramco employees - Mohammed Hashem A. Khatib and Salam P. Salamy of Petroleum Engineering, and Sunil L. Kokal of the Research and Development Center - chaired technical sessions.
Dr. Nansen G. Saleri, manager of the Reservoir Management Department, was a featured speaker at one of the "topical luncheons," where he presented "The Case for Reservoir Management Tenets: Why it Matters to Sustainable Supplies" to an overflow crowd. Saleri used the occasion to showcase Saudi Aramco's reservoir management practices and production strategy.
Answering speculation about an imminent sharp decline in Saudi Arabian oil production capacity, Saleri told the attendees that Saudi Aramco's reservoir management tenets are the key to its oilfield success. Long-term sustainability, outstanding performance and ever-increasing recoveries are the main outcomes fostered, in part, by a new generation of technologies such as smart wells and geosteering.
At an evening event on Sept 28 attended by about 300 people, chief petroleum engineer Amin H. Nasser, gave a presentation titled, "Overview of Saudi Aramco Upstream Activities." Nasser's presentation focused on issues of oil production capacity, reserves and future outlook.
The hub of Saudi Aramco's activities during the conference was a 2,000-square-foot exhibit booth manned by employees from ASC's North American Staffing Services and Public Affairs, and Saudi Aramco's Petroleum Engineering organization. The booth provided the facility for technical presentations, exchanging information with conference participants, hosting meetings between employees of Saudi Aramco and technology companies, and recruiting.
Present at the booth to greet visitors on the opening day of the exhibits were ASC president Mazen I. Snobar, Nasser, and several Saudi Aramco and ASC managers and senior professionals.
Two alternating high-tech presentations were made each day of the conference by Saudi Aramco petroleum engineers, Nabeel I. Al-Afaleg and Matt W. Dahan, in a special mini-theater of the booth. Dr. Al-Afaleg made presentations on the novel concept of "Tunnel Wells" that has been used successfully in the Ghawar field to alleviate reservoir energy problems caused by tar mats. Dahan's presentations demonstrated the use of real-time geosteering technology in drilling highly complex wells in the Qatif field.
“Saudi Aramco," Nasser said, "was successful at this conference in conveying a sense of the immense scale of our operations and projecting the image of perhaps the most progressive and diverse oil company in the world.”
Seven hundred people attending the President's Luncheon at the conference on Sept. 29 applauded the SPE Saudi Arabia Section for receiving the President's Award for Section Excellence.
Salam Salamy, 2003-2004 SPE Saudi Arabia Section chairman, accepted the award on behalf of the section from Dr. Kate H. Baker, 2004 president.
It was the first time a section from the Middle East Region won the award, which recognizes SPE sections whose member programs, technology dissemination and cooperation with other civic and professional organizations are exceptional.
