Posted: 27 October 2004

Voting in the fourth ‘Excellence In Energy’ awards – the Middle East’s annual energy industry ‘Oscars’ - is running at an all-time high with nominations already more than twice last year’s total.

“It appears that the event has gained substantial momentum this year and the expanded profile has encouraged more industry professionals to nominate their preferred winners,” said Eileen Michael of Pipeline Magazine, the Pan Arab world’s foremost monthly publication for the oil and gas sectors, which organises the awards.

This year’s awards series, includes 10 honours, and, for the first time includes winners for the Best Sub-Contractor and the Best Company In Project Management.

Dubai will next month play host to the awards, which will be presented by the UAE Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, His Excellency Obeid bin Saif Al Nasseri.

The awards will be presented at a glittering event at the Nad Al Sheba Golf and Racing Club on November 24 th and will precede the 2004 Oil Barons’ Ball – the regional energy industry’s main social event of the year.

“Tickets for the ball are also selling at twice last year’s pace,” explained Michael. “The energy industry seems this year to be in buoyant mood, perhaps brought on by the highest crude prices in history.”

Other awards to be presented in the ‘Excellence in Energy’ series include: Best Company; Best Company For Health & Safety; Best Company For Environment; Best Company For Industry Technology; Best Company For Information Technology; Best Industry Services Company; Industry Innovator and Project Of The Year.

Last year’s winners included: Saudi Aramco, RasGas of Qatar, Shell In The Middle East, Halliburton, Technip, Schlumberger and ADNOC. Qatar ’s Energy Minister, His Excellency Abdullah Bin Hamad Al Attiyah received the Outstanding Achievement award.

Over 1,000 of the region’s top energy executives are expected to attend the awards and the 2004 Oil Barons’ Ball which follows. The audience will also witness the crowning of the 2004 Middle East Oil Baron.

“The oil baron is the person judged by his peers to be an outstanding individual from within the Middle East energy industry,” explained Michael. “They must be resident in the Middle East , have a strong community spirit, and be an innovator and an active promoter of this region’s energy industry.”
