Seatrade Latest on board weather systems

Posted: 27 October 2004

Meteo Consult, one of the world’s largest independent weather bureaux, is to launch its latest SPOS on board weather forecast system in the Middle East .

The Dutch company will unveil the fifth edition of SPOS, which gives ships up- to -the minute weather reports, at Seatrade Middle East Maritime, the region’s premier event for the maritime industry, which runs from December 6 – 8 at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

Peter Stoter, Marine Department Manager, Meteo Consult, said: “Conventional routing systems do not give a larger picture of the weather system moving across oceans but with SPOS, weather routing is done on board using the most up –to- date data.

“It allows ships to avoid bad weather, save time on ocean crossings and provide a better estimated time of arrival for the vessel.”

SPOS software is installed on board on a normal PC and a subscription is sent to Meteo Consult for forecasts which are then prepared and e-mailed to the ship.

“We have successfully introduced SPOS in Europe and Asia and are now looking to offer it in the Middle East where we already have clients like Mideast Ship Management,” Stoter added.

The Seatrade Middle East Maritime 2004 will be triple the size of last year with Iran, Turkey, India and Pakistan, all setting up pavilions for the first time.

“The region’s maritime industry is going through a period of unprecedented growth and this has attracted new exhibitors who now cover the entire maritime sector, from ship building to insurance,” said Chris Hayman, Managing Director, Seatrade.
