Techno Park joins hands with desalination group

Posted: 27 October 2004

Dubai-based Techno Park has signed a co-operation agreement with the International Desalination Association (IDA) to support the association in research and development in the Middle East and North Africa region.

The US-based IDA is a non-profit organisation which seeks to promote the appropriate use of desalination technology and water reuse worldwide.

Desalination and water resources is a key “cluster” of Techno Park, which acts as a bridge between innovation and enterprise, helping research translate itself into practicality in the real world of business.

Other clusters include Oil and Gas, Petrochemicals, Environment Resources and Management, Biotechnology, and Pharmaceuticals.

Abdulla Ahmed Al Qurashi, Chief Executive officer of Techno Park, said: “ Techno Park will provide a platform for desalination companies and authorities to establish themselves in the region, and derive the benefits of an umbrella for their business prospects as well as the potential of technology improvements.”

Abdulhamid Al Mansour, IDA President, added: “IDA is looking forward to work with Techno Park to further enhance the knowledge of the desalination technology in the area and to make use of the strong presence expected of the main consultants, manufacturers and contractors.”

Desalination is one of the fastest growing industries in the Middle East and North Africa region. It is expected that in the next five years $30 billion will be invested in desalination projects in the Gulf region alone.

Dr. Farouk E-Baz, the senior scientific advisor to Techno Park, said: “Because water is the most valuable resource in this part of the world, emphasis on desalination by the Techno park will allow it to play a major role in the development of the area.”

Dr. Leon Awerbuch, an IDA board director, added: “This is certainly a mutually beneficial agreement that will strengthen both parties.”
