Alba Line 5 Project celebrates environmental milestone
Posted: 03 November 2004
Alba’s Line 5 Expansion Project recently witnessed the on-time completion of the new Bake Furnace Fume Treatment Centre, marking an important milestone in the project’s construction progress and further reiterating Alba’s deep-rooted commitment to protecting the environment. All the pre-operational testing for the Fume Treatment Centre will begin soon.
The Fume Treatment Centre removes polluting elements released during the baking of anodes in a gas-fired furnace. Fumes from both North and South furnaces are ducted and made to pass through a cooling column where the temperature is lowered. The cooled fumes then pass through a reactor chamber where Alumina is injected and circulated. Alumina absorbs or attracts CO, CO2, H2O, SO2 and traces of SO3, including Hydrofluoric Acid (HF) and Tar. The Alumina loaded with all the pollutants is removed from the system using filtering bags and sent back to the Potrooms for re-use.
“The completion of the Fume Treatment Centre marks an environmental milestone both for the project and for Alba which perceives the protection of the environment as its corporate responsibility” was the comment of Line 5 General Manager Niall O’Byrne.
In addition, Mr. O’Byrne continued that “Alba has always maintained a healthy, pollution-free environment within its establishment and similar to all previous expansions, the company has ensured that the latest technology is implemented on the Line 5 expansion to prevent any negative environmental impact”.
“I would also like to commend the Line 5 team for successfully completing the FTC safely and within schedule” continued O’Byrne.
