Posted: 03 November 2004
The president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nayhan, died on Tuesday aged 86. Most businesses closed down on Wednesday for a three day period of mourning. Government offices will close for eight days.
Sheikh Zayed has been president of the country since the federation of seven emirates was created in 1971, and is regarded as its founding father, successfully steering the small, poor societies that made up the country into the present state of great wealth brought on by the oil boom.
The UAE plans to increase oil production from today’s 2.5 million barrels per day to 3.5 million by 2006.
