NDC Peribit technology increases network capacity by eight times

Posted: 10 November 2004

National Drilling Company (NDC), one of the largest oil-drilling contractors in the Middle East, has deployed a new IT solution across 28 of its locations, including on- and off-shore oil wells, increasing its communication network capacity by eight times, reducing its transmission costs, and enhancing communication between sites.

Peribit Networks’ PeriSphere architecture, implemented by systems integrator Bayanat-DPS, has improved the bandwidth of NDC’s wide area network (WAN), by identifying and eliminating repeated data patterns in network traffic.

Installed at all NDC sites in Abu Dhabi, including its off-shore oil rigs, the Peribit solution has enhanced NDC’s communications infrastructure, making it more efficient, and reducing monthly transmission costs. As well as speeding up the WAN, the revolutionary technology has enabled traffic to be segregated for different users and enabled bandwidth to be assigned between users.

“Communication through our WAN was becoming slow and costly,” said Bilal Habash, network and telecommunications team leader, NDC. “Reducing the unnecessary duplicate data patterns meant we were able to increase communication between our sites, and save money.”

NDC, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), looked at offerings from several other vendors to help improve the efficiency of their network traffic, but chose the Peribit solution because of the local support factor.

“Repeated data patterns waste valuable network resources and reduce the efficiency of the network,” said John Rea, regional director, Peribit Networks, “By implementing PeriSphere technology, NDC have slashed the amount of useless data, and will see a significant return on their investment.”

Between 70 and 90 per cent of WAN traffic contains useless repetitive data, which wastes valuable network resources and degrades efficiency and application performance. Peribit’s PeriSphere technology, solves a number of issues, including bandwidth congestion, high latency and the redundant transmission of large files, increasing WAN capacity up to 10 times by reducing traffic by 90 per cent.

“The implementation for NDC was one of the more challenging projects for Bayanat-DPS, due to the remote locations of the sites, which were both on- and off-shore,” said Nader Al Atout, enterprise networks manager, Bayanat-DPS. “Our team of skilled system integrators has provided a robust solution, and will be on hand to offer ongoing technical support.”

Bayanat-DPS technicians installed Peribit Sequence Reducers SR-55 and SR-20 at NDC’s offices and oil rigs, which took around three weeks to complete. Once fully operational, the appliances increased bandwidth by eight times.
