KBR repsol YPF selects KBR, ExxonMobil technology

Posted: 10 November 2004

KBR has been awarded licenses for advanced reaction system technology, as well as basic engineering design packages for Repsol YPF's Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) Units in its La Plata refinery in La Plata, Argentina, and in its Lujan de Cuyo refinery in Mendoza, Argentina. KBR is the engineering and construction subsidiary of Halliburton.

The revamp at the La Plata refinery includes ATOMAX-2 feed nozzles, Short Contact Time Riser Termination, a catalyst cooler, new regenerator cyclones and regenerator debottlenecking. This upgrade will improve performance on lower quality feedstocks producing light olefins.

The upgrade at the Lujan de Cuyo refinery in Mendoza, Argentina includes ATOMAX-2 feed nozzles and Short Contact Time Riser Termination, which will help to improve the product selectivity and productivity of the FCC complex.

"These technologies are part of a technology portfolio offered by the KBR-ExxonMobil Research and Engineering (EMRE) FCC Alliance," explained Tim Challand, KBR's vice president of technology. "Working together, we are continuing to develop processes that result in increased energy savings and equipment design economies for our clients like Repsol."

The KBR and EMRE FCC Alliance combines the considerable design, development and operational experience of these two companies, which were instrumental in the creation of fluid catalytic cracking in the early 1940's, and provides state-of-the-art technology and design with both a design contractor's and refiner's perspective. Safety, operability and reliability are combined with low capital and energy costs to give producers the competitive edge in today's markets.
