ENOC, Chief Executive stresses importance of EHS implementation

Posted: 24 November 2004

The implementation of an Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) policy is today a vital element of business success, according to Hussain Sultan, Group Chief Executive and Board Member of Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) LLC.

Addressing the First ENOC Regional EHS Conference in Dubai, Sultan said EHS policies and procedures are crucial to business structures.

“EHS is no longer just an element of social responsibility,” he said, “it is a vital part of any organisation, vital for employee welfare and for the smooth and efficient operations of any business for the avoidance of human and financial losses.”

Some 240 delegates from around the region attended the conference, held at the Grand Hyatt in Dubai and run under the theme of ‘Managing Our EHS Responsibilities Effectively.’ The conference began with a one-minute silence tribute in memory of the late UAE President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Delegates, who included representatives from all over the UAE and Gulf region, heard six presentations from representatives of the oil and gas industry and reputable EHS consultants.

“The aim of the conference is to bring together clients, authorities, business partners, industry experts and consultants in a networking forum to exchange views in a free and transparent manner,” explained Sultan.

The conference heard that ENOC had organised the event in line with its total commitment to EHS, which has seen the Dubai-headquartered Group develop a dedicated Group EHS Compliance Department team and its own EHS guidelines and codes of practice.

“These are based on local regulations and international best practice,” explained Sultan. “We have a fully-fledged EHS team which ensures compliance through research and development.”

The conference was also co-sponsored by the Groups Affiliates; Emirates Gas Company, Cylingas Company, Horizon Terminals Ltd., Emirates Petroleum Products Company (EPPCO) and the ENOC Processing Company LLC.
