PSL Energy Major contract awarded by Saipem

Posted: 1 December 2004

PSL Energy Services Ltd has been awarded a major contract to provide pipeline pre-commissioning services for all Saipem UK’s 2005 offshore construction projects.

It is believed to be the first time Saipem UK have awarded such an exclusive year-long contract to a single firm and underlines the confidence the Italian contractor has in the Aberdeen-based oil and gas services specialist.

The contract covers Saipem’s operations in the Rhum, Horne/Wren, Saturn, Munro and Buzzard fields and the workscope encompasses all flooding, pigging, hydrotesting and de-watering operations on the new subsea pipelines in each development.

Pre-engineering work has already started and the offshore phase of the contract, expected to be worth up to £2 million, is due to begin in March.

PSL’s managing director, Doug Duguid, said the Saipem contract was strategically important to the company as it underlines PSL’s capability of being able to undertake major turnkey pipeline projects.

Duguid said: “It is unusual for a major client such as Saipem to award all its work for a single season to just one company and is a tremendous compliment to our highly skilled engineers.

“We are delighted Saipem have placed such confidence in PSL’s engineering ability and competence and this award is testimony to our growing reputation as an innovative provider of top quality pipeline services.

“We are working hard to strengthen our position as a market leader in pipeline pre-commissioning work and this latest contract win is the result of strategies that we put in place some time ago to ensure PSL can compete with the best in the market place.”

The North Sea project is the second contract awarded by Saipem to PSL in recent weeks, following a commission to carry out process work in Libya worth an estimated 600,000 Euros.

PSL’s Great Yarmouth base will provide nitrogen leak testing and controlled bolting for Saipem on the Sabratha offshore gas platform. Located in the Tripoli-Ghadames Basin, the Sabratha platform is part of the 7 billion (euro) ENI BV Western Libya Gas Project, the largest hydrocarbon development underway in the North African country.

Pre-engineering on the project has already commenced in Saipem’s Milan office while offshore operations are estimated to commence in January.

Duguid said: “It is very encouraging to be able to win projects across different disciplines and it shows the industry regards PSL as a reputable, reliable and competitive provider of engineering excellence.

“The fact that this project is being driven from our Great Yarmouth base highlights the versatility and mobility of our workforce and equipment.”
