Lukoil to use Roxar’s reservoir modelling solution
Posted: 15 December 2004
Roxar, a technology solutions provider to the upstream oil and gas industry, recently won a new multi million software licensing and maintenance agreement with Russian oil giant, Lukoil ─ one of the world’s top five publicly traded oil companies in terms of proven oil reserves.
The agreement will allow Lukoil’s geologists, geophysicists, and reservoir engineers, wide-ranging access to Roxar’s flagship 3D reservoir modelling product, Irap RMS, and its reservoir simulation software, Tempest.
Tempest, claims Roxar, is a robust, fast, memory efficient reservoir simulation tool, able to provide powerful 2D and 3D visualisation capabilities and simulate a wide range of physical processes within one program. Irap RMS comprises 10 fully integrated software modules including mapping, modelling, planning and workflow management tools designed to help geologists, reservoir engineers and geophysicists increase productivity from existing fields and to shorten the discovery-to-production lifecycle.
The software will be applied to Lukoil’s current oil and gas fields including their Caspian Sea projects and will help the company form detailed modelling of the fields. This will include greater detail on rock lithology, porosity and permeability and the utilisation of stochastic methods to determine the petrophysical characteristics and the reservoir simulation of the field.
Lukoil is one of Russia’s leading vertically integrated oil companies and today is responsible for around 1.5 per cent of global oil reserves, 2.1 per cent of global oil production and 19 per cent of total Russian oil production. Its proven reserves at the beginning of 2003 were 15,522 million bbl of crude oil and 23,253 bcf (billion cubic feet) of natural gas. Lukoil is carrying out international exploration and production projects in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Egypt, North Africa and Columbia and recently signed an agreement to further explore and develop the Kazakh sector of the Caspian sea.
Since it started operating in Russia in 1998, Roxar has become one of the leading suppliers of reservoir modelling software to the national oil and gas industry with more than 600 installations in Russia and the CIS. As well as Lukoil, other customers include leading oil companies, TNK-BP, Bashneft, Sibneft, Tatneft, Rosneft and Zarubejneft.
