Posted: 26 January 2005

“With annual production of just over 25 million tonnes per annum (MTA), RasGas share of this being 16.1 MTA, by the end of 2005 the State of Qatar will have grown to become the second largest producer of LNG in the world,” stated Jerry J. Wolahan during his address to delegates at the 6th International Petroleum and Conference Exhibition, Petrotech 2005 held in New Delhi, India.

Continuing he confirmed, “Since 2002, the LNG industry has experienced unsurpassed growth with worldwide liquefaction capacity increasing by approximately 7 per cent annually over the past two years, a figure which is set to jump nearly 13 per cent in 2005. Contributing to this trend RasGas increased its production capacity by nearly 70 per cent with the addition of train 3 in early 2004. Expansion activity plans currently under development will also ensure that RasGas will become the world's largest producer of LNG by 2008.”

In acknowledging the role of innovation and technology, RasGas’ MD confirmed, “Many of the developments that will position the State of Qatar as the world's leading LNG producer will see new applications to existing technology, and leveraging advancements in technology, to drive development across the entire LNG Value Chain.” Giving examples of technological innovation, he stated, “Applications of technology and advancement of technology are currently being applied offshore with the installation of wet gas pipelines, which allow dehydration facilities to be located onshore; in the liquefaction sector, technology will see 7.8 MTA trains developed in 2008; in LNG transportation, ship capacities will increase from 138,000 m3 to 200,000 to 250,000 m3 and to insure access to developing markets new onshore and offshore terminals are being developed.”

In conclusion Jerry Wolahan also paid tribute to the strong partnerships that have been forged nation-to-nation, business-to-business through the LNG sector. Partnerships such as the one between The State of Qatar and India and RasGas and Petronet provide a model for the continued success of future LNG growth and expansion opportunities.
