ExxonMobil Announces More Than $5 Million in Grants for Malaria
Posted: 02 February 2005
Exxon Mobil Corporation announced more than $5 million in community grants to help fight malaria in Africa . As a business with major oil and gas production operations in five African nations and petroleum retail, marketing and distribution activities in more than twenty, ExxonMobil is keenly aware of malaria's devastating impact on individuals, communities and economies.
" Africa is a significant and growing contributor to the world's energy economy, but diseases like malaria continue to wreak havoc on the health of African people. Through our Africa Health Initiative, we are working to support governments and health care providers to reduce the impact of this devastating disease," said Rex Tillerson, president, Exxon Mobil Corporation. Malaria is a disease that is preventable, treatable and curable, yet every year there are at least 300 million acute cases of malaria globally, resulting in more than one million deaths. Nine out of ten malaria deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa , mostly in young children and pregnant women. An African child dies from malaria every thirty seconds. Malaria also presents major obstacles to social and economic development. Economists believe that malaria is responsible for a growth penalty of up to 1.3 percent per year in some African countries.
In April 2000, African Heads of State committed themselves to an intensive effort to halve the malaria mortality for Africa 's people by 2010. ExxonMobil is proud to support Africa 's progress towards this public health goal. "We believe that improvements in public health serve as the basis for broader economic and social gains," said Mr. Tillerson.
