Schlumberger Opens Global Reservoir Fluids Center in Canada

Facility to enhance research and development of applications for production operations, including heavy oil resources
Schlumberger Oilfield Services announced the official opening of its Reservoir Fluids Center (RFC), located in Edmonton , Alberta , Canada .
The new state-of-the-art 30,000 sq. ft. center will enable Schlumberger to further advance its research in reservoir fluids, as well as develop knowledge, equipment and methodologies needed to apply this research to practical operations. The facility features approximately 9,000 sq. ft of laboratory space, 6500 sq. ft. of equipment manufacturing and assembly space, as well as office space for research and product development, engineering, software development and administrative staff.
“The industry has recognized the need for more intensive oil-and-gas R&D,” says Claude Durocher, vice president, Schlumberger Canada. “There is also growing interest in the production and exploitation of heavier, more viscous oils—up to and including bitumen mining—which requires better understanding of the reservoir and the fluid behavior. Including Edmonton personnel and specialists throughout Schlumberger globally, we can draw upon cumulative, world-class expertise totaling hundreds of years to help answer our customers’ most challenging reservoir fluid analysis questions. Ultimately, this can translate into increased production for our customers at reduced risk.”
Schlumberger is a recognized research and development (R&D) leader in the solutions marketplace for reservoir fluid problems, with more than 20 years’ experience in the field. The new Edmonton center answers the need for additional R&D in reservoir fluids and will especially benefit companies developing heavy oil resources, such as those in western Canada.There are 60 people employed at the center.
Schlumberger has a worldwide network of 23 research, development and technology centers that focus on the development of end-to-end reservoir solutions.
