Gastech 2005 - The Record-Breaker -Goes Out Of This World

Posted: 02 February 2005

Gastech 2005, the 21 st International Conference and Exhibition for the LNG, LPG and Natural Gas Industries is set to be a true record breaker in terms of the number of exhibiting companies taking part and the space they are using; the number of delegates attending; and also in the exceptional quality of speakers involved in the conference.

This year’s conference chalks up an original “first”. In keeping with its theme “Making projects happen”, a keynote address will be given by Captain M ichael Lopez-Alegria, United States Navy, the Madrid-born NASA Astronaut, who flew on three space missions - STS-73 Columbia (October 20 to November 5, 1995); STS-92 Discovery (October 11-24, 2000); and STS-113 Endeavour (November 23-Dec 7, 2002).

“We are delighted that Captain Lopez-Alegria will be with us at Gastech 2005,” said Event Director. Tony Stephenson. “We felt that he could shed very definite light on our theme of “making projects happen”!”

Following his first space flight Captain Lopez-Alegria served as NASA Director of Operations at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center , Star City , Russia . After his second mission, he led the newly formed ISS Crew Operations branch of the Astronaut Office. Upon completion of his third spaceflight, he was assigned as the technical assistant to JSC’s EVA Office. Lopez-Alegria has logged over 42 days in space, circled the Earth 674 times, and performed 5 EVAs totalling 34 hours. He is currently training in Star City and at JSC for assignment to a long duration space flight aboard the International Space Station.

Yet another “first”
For the first time the delegate list for Gastech appears on the event’s website at www.gastech.co.uk - already numbering nearly 1,000 (there were 1,446 at Gastech 2002, so the 2005 event is well set to comfortably exceed that)

from 51countries, the web-based list shows what a high proportion of very senior executives (Chairmen, Presidents, CEOs, Vice Presidents and Managing Directors) from around the world will be attending. It will be regularly updated.

The new Bilbao Exhibition Centre, opened in April 2004, provides an ideal setting for Gastech 2005. The event takes place in one of the fastest growing gas consuming economies in the world, and Bilbao is the main headquarters of Spain’s key utility company Iberdrola; the home of Sestao Izar Shipyard; the site of an LNG regasification facility (with a planned, and newly announced, expansion programme taking it from two to three tanks to provide added capacity and flexibility); an 800MW gas fired combined cycle plant; and a new trans-European gas connection with France.

Since its inception, Gastech has evolved into an international networking forum with a packed social programme, technical tours, partner programmes, informal business meetings and cava and wine poster sessions – a new feature for 2005.
