GE Energy To Supply Solar Equipment For Pardee Homes Project

Posted: 09 February 2005

Pardee Homes has selected GE Energy's solar energy equipment for use in the Evergreen residential development, which is part of a new California village that will be the largest solar-powered community in the United States .

Pardee Homes' Evergreen community is located in Terramor Village , one of six villages that will be part of Ladera Ranch, an 8,100-home development being built in South Orange County . Installation is anticipated to be completed in late 2005, and the combined solar electric systems in the Evergreen community are rated at 40 kilowatts and are expected to create 59,000-kilowatt hours of sun-generated power annually.

GE's roof-integrated system replaces a roof's tiles and blends seamlessly with the roofline. The integrated system provides a unique combination of functionality and attractiveness, adding value to a home.

Ladera Ranch is served by San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E), a subsidiary of Sempra Energy. GE Energy's equipment integrates with SDG&E's "net-metering program," in which any excess power not used by a solar home will be fed to the public grid, causing the customer's meter to spin backwards and yield a credit on the monthly utility bill.

When fully built, Terramor Village will have 1,260 homes, with nearly 500 powered by solar energy. More than 75 percent of Terramor's homes sited for solar will use GE equipment capable of generating more than 600 kilowatts and nearly 889,000 kilowatt hours annually — making Terramor Village the nation's largest solar community.

"Pardee Homes has been very fortunate to work with GE Energy on many solar projects," said Joyce Mason, vice president, marketing, Pardee Homes. "As energy costs continue to rise, we notice more and more consumers are concerned with the energy efficiency in their homes. Pardee Homes offers homeowners many energy-saving options including Zero Energy Homes, Energy Star ® homes, Living Smart ® choices, and GE Energy's solar technology."

"GE Energy is pleased to again partner with Pardee Homes to bring solar technology to residents of Evergreen in Terramor Village ," said Ali Iz, general manager, GE Energy's solar technologies division. "This is our seventh solar project with Pardee and we look forward to providing Pardee homeowners with energy-saving solar technology in the coming years."

Pardee Homes' Evergreen community offers earth-friendly and energy-saving options, including Zero Energy Homes (ZEH). Through the use of renewable energy systems, the U.S. Department of Energy's ZEH initiative aims to reduce the amount of energy consumed by single-family homes.

GE Energy's current range of solar energy products includes solar cells, modules and pre-packaged systems. The modules range from 35 to 165 watts, while system designs can range from hundreds of watts to megawatts and can be used in either on-grid or off-grid applications.

GE Energy's solar equipment is manufactured at its Newark , Delaware facility.
